1940 Blue-eyed soul singer Bill Medley (of The Righteous Brothers) is born in Los Angeles, California.

1943 Cass Elliot (of The Mamas & The Papas) is born Ellen Naomi Cohen in Baltimore, Maryland.

1958 Lita Ford is born in London. She joins the all-female rock group The Runaways as a teenager and has a hit with "Kiss Me Deadly" in 1988.

1973: Gram Parsons died of a lethal combination of morphine and alcohol in Joshua Tree, CA. He was 26 years old.

1981: Simon and Garfunkel reunited for their first concert in eleven years at New York’s Central Park which was attended by over 750,000 people.

2003: Cream bassist Jack Bruce underwent a liver transplant after being diagnosed with liver cancer earlier in the summer. He went on to make a full recovery.

1973 - 30 year old Jim Croce was killed in a plane crash on September 20th, after playing a concert at North-western State University, Natchitoches, Louisiana. His small charter plane, a Beechcraft D-18, hit a tree just after take-off in bad weather. He and Maury Muehleisen, his lead guitarist, both died in the crash, along with the members of the plane's crew. Only a week before, Croce finished recording his third album, "I Got a Name".

2010
- Leonard Skinner, the Florida school teacher who inspired a group of high school students to use his misspelled name during their rise to fame as the Rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, passed away at a nursing home at the age of 77. Although the band did not get along with Mr. Skinner when he was their teacher, they eventually became friends.

1976, AC/DC released their third studio album 'Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap'. The album has been certified 6x Platinum in the United States, which means that it has sold at least 6 million copies, becoming the third highest sold album by AC/DC in the US after 'Highway To Hell' and 'Back In Black'.

1994, The Dave Matthews Band released ‘Under the Table and Dreaming’, the album featured their first commercial hits ‘What Would You Say,’ ‘Satellite,’ and ‘Ants Marching.’ The album was dedicated to Matthews' older sister Anne, who was killed by her husband in 1994 in a murder-suicide.

1967 Arlo Guthrie releases Alice's Restaurant.

1967 Identical twins Matthew and Gunnar Nelson (of Nelson) are born to teen idol Ricky Nelson and actress Kristin Harmon in Santa Monica, California.

1968 Ben Shepherd (bass player for Soundgarden) is born Hunter Benedict Shepherd in Okinawa, Japan, but would be raised in Bainbridge Island, Washington.

1966 Jimmy Hendrix changes his name to Jimi at the urging of his manager Chas Chandler.

1968 Jimi Hendrix releases "All Along The Watchtower.

1972 Liam Gallagher is born William John Paul Gallagher in Burnage, Manchester, England. He forms Oasis with his older brother, Noel.

1972 David Silveria (Korn drummer) is born in San Leandro, California.

1989 Rush move away from their keyboard-heavy sound with Presto, their 13th studio album and first under the Atlantic Records label. The album's four singles (including "Show Don't Tell," "Presto," "The Pass," and "Superconductor") all crack the Top 40.

1991 Status Quo set a world record when they play four separate British arenas in one 11-hour period.

1993 Bad Religion release their seventh full-length studio album, Recipe for Hate. This album was originally released on Epitaph Records, but was quickly reissued by their now-former label Atlantic.
