1942 Rock singer Danny Hutton (of Three Dog Night) is born in Buncrana, Donegal, Ireland.

1945 José Feliciano is born José Montserrate Feliciano García in Lares, Puerto Rico. Known for the Christmas classic "Feliz Navidad.

1946 Don Powell (drummer for Slade) is born in Bilston, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England. He would become interested in drums as a Boy Scout.

1949 Barriemore Barlow (drummer/percussionist for Jethro Tull) is born in Birmingham, England.

1950 Joe Perry (lead guitarist for Aerosmith) is born Anthony Joseph Perry in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

1956 Johnnie Fingers (keyboardist for The Boomtown Rats) is born John Peter Moylett in Ireland.

1966 Robin Goodridge (drummer for Bush) is born in Crawley, West Sussex, England.

1966 Miles Zuniga (guitarist/vocalist for Fastball) is born in Laredo, Texas

1973: The Rolling Stones’ song “Star Star” was banned from airplay by the BBC due to the chorus containing profanity.

1975: Kiss released their first live album Alive! The double album went on to become their first top ten album in the U.S. and to this day it’s considered a landmark for live albums.

1979: The Who performed their first American concert without Keith Moon who died the previous year in Passaic, NJ at the Capitol Theater with new drummer Kenney Jones.

2003 Johnny Cash dies of complications from diabetes. The 71 year-old singer/songwriter had an amazing career spanning six decades - even earning an MTV Video nomination (for "Hurt") earlier in the year.

1969, The first day of the 3 day Rugby Bag Blues Festival in Warwickshire, England with Pink Floyd, The Nice, Taste, Free, Third Ear Band, Ralph McTell, Roy Harper, King Crimson, The Strawbs, Edgar Broughton, Spirit of John Morganand John Martyn, tickets from 12/6.

2000, Elton John threw a tantrum when he was set to appear at a sell-out show at the Estoril Casino near Lisbon. Elton was unhappy after the audience were slow in leaving a VIP dinner before the concert, Elton left the building and flew home on his private jet without playing a note.

1941 David Clayton-Thomas is born in England. He would grow up in Canada and become the lead singer in Blood, Sweat, Tears, bringing with him their biggest hit, "Spinning Wheel."

1944 Peter Cetera (bassist/vocalist for Chicago) is born in Chicago, Illinois.

1961 Dave Mustaine (lead singer/guitarist for Megadeth) is born in La Mesa, California.

1976 Lynyrd Skynyrd releases their first live album, One More from the Road. It's the only live album the band releases before a 1977 plane wreak ends the original lineup and puts the band out of commission entirely for fourteen years.

2011 After an eight-year absence, Anthrax release their 10th studio album, Worship Music. Joey Belladonna, who hasn't been with the band since 1992, returns to handle lead vocals.

This Day In Rock History: September 14th


1981, The Rolling Stones played a secret pre tour warm-up show at the Sir Morgan's Cove club in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA. Billed as Little Boy Blue & The Cockroaches, a local radio station announced that the Stones were in town, resulting in the club being besieged by over 4,000 fans attempted to get into the 350-person venue. Police were drafted in to control the crowds, which resulted in eleven fans being arrested.

2005, The newly refurbished Grateful Dead's original tour bus went on display at the Volo Auto Museum in Volo, Illinois. The 1965 Gillig bus, which Jerry Garcia and the rest of the Dead dubbed ‘Sugar Magnolia’ was used by the band on their frequent tours across the US between 1967 and 1985. The ceiling was lined with hundreds of vintage rock posters featuring The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Janice Joplin and others who had visited the bus.
