1964: The Beatles released “Matchbox/Slow Down.”

1979: “I Wanna Be Your Lover” by Prince was released. It was his first U.S. hit.

1979: The Cars performed at New York’s Central Park for an audience of a half million people.

1982: The Rolling Stones’ live version of “Time Is On My Side,” from their live LP “Still Life,” was released as a single.

1989: The Who performed “Tommy” at the Universal Amphitheater with special guests Steve Winwood, Elton John, Phil Collins, Patti LaBelle and Billy Idol.

1999: Warner Brothers released the album “The Vault…Old Friends 4 Sale” by Prince.

1967, 17-year old singer and guitarist Bruce Springsteen joined a group called Earth.

1968, The Incredible String Band, Traffic, Bonzo Dog Band, Family, Fairport Convention, Blossom Toes, Pretty things, Deviants, Blonde On Blonde and Free all appeared over two nights at The Roundhouse in London.

1938 David Freiberg (vocalist and multi-instrumentalist for Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Airplane) is born in Cincinnati, Ohio.

1943 John Cipollina (lead guitarist for Quicksilver Messenger Service) is born in Berkeley, California.

1945 Ken Hensley (multi-instrumentalist and songwriter for Uriah Heep) is born in Hertfordshire, England.

1947 Jim Fox (drummer for the James Gang) is born in Cleveland, Ohio

1951 Danny Joe Brown (lead singer of Molly Hatchet) is born in Jacksonville, Florida.

1951 Michael Derosier (former drummer for Heart) is born in Canada.

1967 Keith Moon, drummer for The Who, drives his Lincoln Continental (not a Rolls Royce, as is often thought), into the swimming pool at the Holiday Inn in Flint, Michigan, to celebrate his 21st birthday, earning the entire band a lifetime ban from the chain.

1965, Two female Beatles fans hired a helicopter to fly over the house The Beatles were renting in Beverly Hills, California and jumped from the helicopter into the swimming pool.

1970, Elton John made his US live debut when he kicked off a 17-date tour at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. In the audience that night were Don Henley, Quincy Jones and Leon Russell. Elton's latest single 'Border Song' had just debuted at number 92 on the US chart.

2014, Led Zeppelin's 'Whole Lotta Love' was voted the greatest guitar riff of all time by listeners of BBC Radio 2 in the UK. The rock classic came out top from a list of 100 riffs drawn up by a panel of Radio 2 and 6 Music DJs, critics and record producers. 'Sweet Child O' Mine' by Guns 'N' Roses was second in the poll, with Back In Black (AC/DC) and 'Smoke On The Water' (Deep Purple) the next most popular.

1976 - Boston releases its self-titled album, which will become the best-selling, debut Rock album of all time.

1989 - John Mellencamp becomes a grandfather at age 38 when his daughter Michelle gives birth to daughter, Elexis Suzanne Peach.

1994 - Jimmy Buffett's Grumman G-44 Widgeon seaplane flips after taking off in Nantucket, Mass. Unharmed, he swims to safety.

2015
- Iron Maiden unveiled a new Boeing 747-400 Jumbo Jet that will be taking them on tour around the world. Vocalist Bruce Dickinson was in training to fly the plane.

2016
- Bruce Springsteen set a personal record for his longest US show when he played for four hours, besting the mark he had set two nights earlier when The E Street Band performed for three hours and fifty-two minutes.

1949 Gene Simmons (of Kiss) is born Chaim Weitz in Haifa, Israel, to **** concentration camp survivor Flora Klein and her carpenter husband, Feri.

1951 Rob Halford (front man for Judas Priest) is born in Sutton Coldfield, England.

1952 Geoff Downes (keyboard player/songwriter for Asia and Yes) is born Stockport, Cheshire, England.

1962 Vivian Campbell, who would replace the late Steve Clark as guitarist for Def Leppard, is born in Belfast, County Antrim, Northern Ireland.

1973 Butch Trucks, drummer for The Allman Brothers Band, crashes his car while driving in Macon, Georgia, breaking his leg in the process. This happens within sight of the spot where Duane Allman had died in a crash two years earlier.

1966 Dream Theater keyboardist Derek Sherinian has a birthday.

1973 The Allman Brothers release "Ramblin' Man." On the same day their "Brothers and Sisters" LP hits the charts.

2009 Black Label Society front man Zakk Wylde is hospitalized in Eugene, OR, suffering from blood clots in both lungs and one leg. The illness forces Black Label Society to cancel the remaining dates of their Pedal To The Metal tour. " can't sing because pushing can cause an embolism," writes Wylde on his Twitter page. Tour partners Mudvayne and Static-X press on.

1967, Small Faces, Move, The Gass, Tomorrow, Denny Laine, Jeff Beck, Eric Burdon and Marmalade all appeared on the first day of the 3-day non-stop happening 'Festival of the Flower Children' at Woburn Abbey, England. Plus DJ's John Peel and Tommy Vance, day tickets cost £1.

1970, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, (his last ever UK appearance), Donovan, Jethro Tull, Miles Davis, Arrival, Cactus, Family, Taste, Mungo Jerry, ELP, The Doors, The Who, Spirit, The Moody Blues, Chicago, Procol Harum, Sly and the Family Stone and Free all appeared over three days at the third Isle Of Wight Festival. Weekend tickets, £3.

1977, Uriah Heep, Thin Lizzy, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Eddie and the Hot Rods, Golden Earing, Aerosmith, Doobie Brothers, Hawkwind, Racing Cars, John Miles, Graham Parker, The Enid, No Dice and Frankie Miller's Full House all appeared at the 17th three day Reading Festival, England. A three day ticket cost £7.95.
