1947 Rock musician Ian Anderson (lead vocalist for Jethro Tull) is born in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland.

1961 Jon Farriss (drummer for INXS) is born in Perth, Western Australia.

1968 The Who releases "Magic Bus."

1999 Lynyrd Skynyrd releases their tenth studio album, Edge of Forever.

1950 Eric Braunn (guitarist for Iron Butterfly) is born Rick Davis in Pekin, Illinois.

1964 The Who, temporarily known as the High Numbers, take the stage at Harrow, England's Railway Hotel, but not before lead singer Roger Daltrey is involved in a fistfight with his father-in-law just outside.

2011 Warrant lead singer Jani Lane dies at age 47 after a long battle with drug and alcohol addiction.

1989, The two day Moscow Music Peace Festival was held at The Lenin Stadium in Moscow, Russia. Western Acts who appeared included Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, Bon Jovi, Skid Row and The Scorpions. This was the first time that an audience had been allowed to stand up and dance at a stadium rock concert in the Soviet Union. Previous to this, all concerts had to be seated.

2012, The London 2012 Olympics ended with a spectacular musical closing ceremony. The three-hour show featured some of the biggest names of British music from decades past, including the Spice Girls, George Michael, The Who, Take That, Muse, Jessie J, Emeli Sande, Elbow, Madness, The Pet Shop Boys, One Direction, Ray Davies, Liam Gallagher, and Brian May and Roger Taylor from Queen.

1994 - Woodstock '94 opened in Saugerties, NY. The opening was on the 25th anniversary of the Woodstock Music and Art Fair.

1974 Bad Company releases "Can't Get Enough."

2008 Metallica releases "The Day That Never Comes," the lead single from their ninth studio album, Death Magnetic.

1965, Jefferson Airplane made their live debut at San Francisco's Matrix Club. The photograph of the members of Jefferson Airplane that was featured on the front cover of their best-known album, Surrealistic Pillow (1967), was taken inside the Matrix.

This Day In Rock History: August 14th


1971, The Who released their fifth studio album Who's Next which featured the classic song 'Won't Get Fooled Again' and has since been viewed by critics as the Who's best record and one of the greatest rock albums of all time. The cover artwork shows a photo of the band apparently having just urinated on a large concrete piling, but according to photographer Ethan Russell, most of the band members were unable to urinate, so rainwater was tipped from an empty film canister to achieve the desired effect.

1988, Lead singer, poet and front man of Hawkwind Robert Calvert died of a heart attack. He was a member of Hawkwind from 1972-1979 during which time he co-wrote their hit single 'Silver Machine' and directed their Space Ritual Tour.
