1983 - During a 48-date North American tour, U2 played at Red Rocks Amphitheater near Denver. Despite it almost getting cancelled due to rain and inclement weather, the moody concert was recorded and released as U2 Live At Red Rocks: Under A Blood Red Sky. Originally released in 1984 on videocassette, the video gained the Irish rock band more global attention and a reputation as incredible live performers.

1990 American drummer Jim Hodder drowned in his swimming pool aged 42. He was the original drummer with Steely Dan and also worked with Sammy Hagar and David Soul.

2002 Dee Dee Ramone, (Douglas Glenn Colvin), bass guitarist with the Ramones died at his Hollywood, California apartment of a heroin overdose aged 49. He was the group's primary songwriter, penning songs such as 'Rockaway Beach', '53rd & 3rd', and 'Poison Heart'.

2020 Forbes.com named Elton John as the biggest earner in Rock music over the last twelve months with an income of $81 million. He was followed by The Rolling Stones ($59 million), Phil Collins ($45 million), Eagles ($41 million), Metallica ($40.5 million), Bon Jovi ($38 million), U2 ($38 million), Paul McCartney ($37 million) and KISS ($37.5 million).

1947 Badfinger guitarist Tom Evans is born in Liverpool, England.

1952 Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain is born Michael Henry McBrain outside of London, England.

1977 Alice Cooper's boa constrictor - a star of his stage show - dies after the rat he is served for breakfast bites him. Cooper holds open auditions for a new snake, eventually choosing one named Angel.

2003 Metallica unleash their album St. Anger, with no guitar solos and one of the harshest drum tones ever committed to tape.

1971 Grand Funk broke The Beatles' box office record by selling out Shea Stadium in 72 hours. The concert grossed more than $300,000. That was about $2,000 more than The Beatles made at their 1965 Shea concert.

1970: Procol Harum released their fourth album, Home. After the departure of organist Matthew Fisher and bassist David Knights and the addition of former member Chris Copping, the band had returned to the lineup when they had been known as The Paramounts before changing their name to Procol Harum.

1982 Tom Petty, Crosby Stills & Nash, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Stevie Nicks and Jackson Browne all appeared at The Rose Bowl, Pasadena, California to a crowd of 85,000 fans at the six hour Peace Sunday, We Have A Dream antinuclear concert. Dylan was joined onstage with Joan Baez and duetted with her on Blowin’ In The Wind and With God On Our Side. The show was partly broadcast on ABC TV’s Entertainment Tonight program on the same day.

2005 John Bonham was voted at No. 1 in Classic Rock Magazine's '50 Greatest Drummers in Rock' listing Moby Dick as Bonham's defining moment. During live sets with Zeppelin his drum solo Moby Dick would often last for half an hour and regularly featured the use of his bare hands.

2017 The site of the 1969 Woodstock music festival was officially recognized for its place in history when Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that Bethel Woods Center for the Arts had been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

2019 American singer and songwriter Dr John known for music combining blues, pop, jazz, boogie woogie and rock and roll died at the age of 77 after suffering a heart attack. Born Malcolm John Rebennack his career started in the late 1950s, when he became prominent as a pianist and singer on the New Orleans music scene. He also worked with the Rolling Stones, Carly Simon, James Taylor, Neil Diamond, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Bob Seger and Joe Walsh.
