1942 Curtis Mayfield is born in Chicago, Illinois.

1947 T. Rex drummer Mickey Finn is born Michael Norman Finn outside of London, England.

1950 Glam rocker Suzi Quatro is born in Detroit, Michigan.

1952 Billy Powell (keyboardist for Lynyrd Skynyrd) is born in Corpus Christi, Texas.

1964 Kerry King (guitarist for Slayer) is born in Los Angeles, California.

1965 Mike Gordon (bass guitarist for Phish) is born in Sudbury, Massachusetts.

1943, Born on this day, Michael Clarke, drummer, The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Byrds, who had the 1965 US & UK No.1 single 'Mr Tambourine Man'. Clarke died of liver failure on December 19th 1993.

1970, Deep Purple released their fourth studio album 'Deep Purple In Rock'. This was the first album to feature the classic Mk II lineup of - Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ian Paice.

1970 The Kinks Ray Davies was forced to make a 6,000 mile round trip from New York to London to record one word in a song. Davies had to change the word 'Coca- Cola' to 'Cherry Cola' on the bands forthcoming single 'Lola' due to an advertising ban at BBC Radio.

2002, Paul McCartney, Sting, Elton John, Brian Wilson, Cliff Richard, Ozzy Osbourne, The Corrs, Will Young, Atomic Kitten and S Club 7 all appeared at The Queen's Jubilee concert at Buckingham Palace, London.

2016, English folk musician and singer-songwriter Dave Swarbrick died aged 75. He was a member of Fairport Convention and one of the most highly regarded musicians produced by the second British folk revival, contributing to some of the most important groups and projects of the 1960s, and he became a much sought-after session musician, which led him throughout his career to work with many of the major figures in folk and folk rock music.

1965 At an estimated cost of about £11,000, John Lennon takes possession of a new Rolls-Royce Phantom V to replace the used Rolls he had purchased nearly a year earlier. The enormous vehicle measured an astonishing 19 feet, 10 inches long, and six feet, seven inches wide. Not yet adorned with the distinctive Romany paint job that would follow, the car featured a cocktail cabinet, writing table, reading lamps, a television and dark tinted windows.

1982 36-year-old Rusty Day, who sang with both The Amboy Dukes and Cactus, was murdered by unknown assailants at his home in Longwood, Florida. His son, his dog, and a guest named Garth McRae were also killed in the attack. The case remains officially unsolved.

1991 To help pay off his $16 million tax bill, Willie Nelson releases an album of tunes seized by federal agents. The disc was called "Who'll Buy My Memories - The IRS Tapes".

2017 Gregg Allman of The Allman Brothers Band was laid to rest at Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon, Georgia. He died of complications from cancer on May 27th at the age of 69. Along with his family, those in attendance included bandmates Jaimoe, Dickey Betts and Derek Trucks, as well as former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Peter Frampton, and Gregg's ex-wife Cher.

1944 Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & The Papas is born Holly Michelle Gilliam in Long Beach, California.

1945 Gordon Waller (of Peter & Gordon) is born in Braemar, Scotland.

1953 Jimmy McCulloch (guitarist for Thunderclap Newman, lead guitarist, bassist for Wings) is born in Dumbarton, Scotland.

1994 Derek Leckenby (lead guitarist for Herman's Hermits) dies of non-Hodgkin lymphoma at age 51.

1997 Ronnie Lane (bass guitarist of The Small Faces, The Faces) dies at age 51 after a 21-year battle with multiple sclerosis.

2003 A grandfather who set up his own pirate radio station in Wakefield, Yorkshire, is under investigation by local broadcasting authorities. The man known as Ricky Rock had erected a 32-foot transmitter in his garden and had been playing hits by The Beach Boys, The Beatles, and Elvis Presley. Ricky said he set the station up because "talent-less boy bands and dance music" featured on local stations did not cater to the tastes of his generation.

This Day In Rock History: June 4th


1976 Columbia Records releases Boz Scaggs' single, "Lowdown", which would climb to #3 on the Hot 100 the following October. Written by Scaggs and future Toto founder David Paitch, the recording also included two other members of that band, drummer Jeff Porcaro and bass player David Hungate. The tune went on to win the 1976 Grammy Award for Best R&B Song, making Scaggs the first White artist to win that prize. (Leo Sayer was the second, taking the trophy the next year for "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing".) "Lowdown" was included on Scagg's album "Silk Degrees", which would peak at #2, selling over five million copies.

2013 Drummer Joey Covington, who played with Jefferson Airplane from 1970-72 and later in the offshoot band Hot Tuna, died in a car crash in Palm Springs. He was 67 years old.

2020 Steve Priest, bassist and co-founder of the Glam Rock band Sweet, died at the age of 72. Between 1971 and 1984, the group placed 16 songs on the UK Top 40 and 5 in the US Top 40.
