Re: The New Official Who Thread

^^The first time Pete let loose on stage and started smashing things, both Roger and John looked at him like he was totally insane, but Keith joined right in and the legend was born.:oyea:

According to the documentary I saw, Pete was studying a particular philosopher who's mantra preached the "Destruct!" method of expressing your inner most feelings.:grinthumb

Yeah, that seems about right. :heheh: John and Roger always struck me as the more reserved ones in the group. John is quiet but Roger has always been pretty vocal about taking care of himself and the "destruct method" just doesn't fit in with that.

Roger was by far the smartest of them all, he's kept himself in great shape his whole life. In fact I think Pete credits him with basically pulling him back from the abyss years ago, Roger gave him supreme shit for throwing his life away with his excessive drinking and poor lifestyle choices.

Sadly a few years ago I was not surprised when John was found dead of a cocaine overdose in Las Vegas I believe it was. I guess some people are hard wired to continue their destructive lifestyles even if they know it's not going to end well.:(

Yeah, that`s a real shame....I have had several friends who played too long and quit too late, the damage was done!

I have witnessed the same thing in my family, one of whom will most likely drink himself to an early grave, and won't listen to anyone about it. Sad but I've given up saying anything anymore.

I watched an interview once (on VH1's Rock Honors for The Who I believe) where Roger was either frustrated or disappointed in John, saying something like "You should've been getting that kind of stuff out of your system years ago when you were young and your body could handle it."

I wouldn't doubt it for a moment. Everyone is curious when they are young and wants to experiment with what the world has to offer. Unfortunately many people don't realize the danger until it's too late, especially those with money and lots of free time at their disposal. One article I read in Rolling Stone in the late 70's was very enlightening. I can't remember who it was they interviewed but he said half the trouble with being a rock star was the money, the women, and the endless amount or boredom you face while on tour. Even with the best intentions to clean up your act, when you went back on the road you fell into the trap once more. What struck me about John's death, was even though I don't follow the personal lives of musicians or actors generally, I would have bet the farm he was past all those drug addled days of his youth. You are supposed to gain wisdom as you get older, in theory at least.

Well you said it yourself, LG. He was probably bored and probably had that "What's the worst thing that could happen" mentality in his head. I have a feeling that a lot of rockstars (as well as celebrities in general) probably have it in their heads that they're more invincible than "normal people" and the fact of the matter is that they're just as flimsy as the rest of us.
