Brick Layers (See Yahoo link) is like it's a title that builds brick by brick. The song builds into many different peaks in the chorus until it explodes into distortion, chaos and drama! Like in the chorus where it says I don't want to scare you it builds into a climax that challenges that whole notion. Maybe it's a test of bravery or the great delusion the song refers to.

South FM-Brick Layers

living in houses, buying the bricks that build these walls
raising the layers, brick upon brick to make you whole
take a look. you'll see this place is desolate
everybody is hiding in their perfect little houses
building from the inside with no way out
and i don't want to scare you but i think that you might like to know
that every brick you lay is just another day you spend alone
and i don't want to scare you
and i promise you that i will be brave and let them hear what you have to say
hiding in the cracked foundations praying no one can see
fortress ourselves in the great delusion in our animosity
follow this assembly line until your face is undefined
until your name is meaningless until you cannot recognize
why you began to build this place why you started from the inside out
why you didn't build a door for god why you didn't build a door

Driving
(see Yahoo link for album version) is my favorite track on the album and it's also the simplest! It's a bluesy acoustic track but one that touches me lyrically and the simplicity with the way the vocal is the main element just matches the feel of the song. One man who's driving/going through life and contemplating all the lessons and reflections in his time of solidarity. I feel this song every time and it's one I'll relate to no matter what age I'm at.

Driving

drip drip drip on the windshield
all the cars pass me by
on a long road from somewhere
in a car with no lights
but jesus told me to come here
and judas says its a lie
and maybe I'm doubting thomas
but only when peter denies
its going to be a long way home from here
saw a girl on the roadside
she was holding a book
she read me chapters and verses
and all the things I mistook before
all the things that she told me
were things Ialready knew
she's the perfect reminder of all the things I've been driving through
I guess it just gets lonely in this car
I thought that you might stay and keep me awake
all the roses
wrapped in letters
that were never sent
to the girl who needed them the most
you're a liar
back seat driver
such a whiner when things get complicated
keep it simple so everyone will understand
there's a chance that a change might occur in the depths that I'd go for you
still i keep driving
unaware of where I'm driving to

So what do we have for an ending to album one of what I consider to be two classic albums. The closer Becomes Apart is pretty much the most aggressive track right from the start and is overall the heaviest. One more thing that showed that South FM was not afraid to break the rules. It's a great contrast to the previous track Driving and an epic end to an epic album.

Becomes Apart

the restless crowded all around him. 39 lashes echoing.
beneath the broken brow of posture. beneath the broken everything. these eyes can penetrate the laughter. this liquid solemns all the grin. hoping to find a constant only to find the only constant is change. we want to bring this constant change. this dying brings this constant change. and we walk to bring this constant change. falling within the line to take of the bread and wine. reminded of what this broken posture brings for you and me. the restless echoing. the broken everything. eyes can penetrate. why does this burden break. the constant memory of solemn suffering becomes apart of me...in footsteps following. and we walk to bring this constant change
