I can't put this off any longer! Honestly the only reason these guys have not had a thread made by me yet is the regrettably lack of certain essentials to display and that is one thing I try to do in my threads is to give the band justice! Aside from the Smashing Pumpkins, with just two official albums made, this is my favorite group and definitely the best band that came out of the 2,000's for me. These guys are a band that mixes pop and hard rock with progressive elements and an amazing vocalist. In my perfect band it wouldn't be Billy Corgan as lead vocalist! Shocked? :heheh: It would be lead vocalist of SouthFM:

Paco Estrada
4651351673_31dfda832c_z.jpgl_3fa2dfadca2049108c1416679e177300.png

I've never heard a vocalist before that had that perfect blend of melody and range without being screechy and having the weight to fit the heaviest material that the band would throw out! Paco could sing the phone book! If Paco doesn't break out of the glass ceiling he's been under whether it be through rock, pop or even R&b and soul than there's something wrong with the world!

The first song I ever heard from SouthFM was from corresponding with a girl during my first experience on any board/forum. The board happened to be the official MTV message board and this girl knew her way around finding a variety of new bands and also in the diversity of her selections. I had prided myself on being great at finding new artist on my own but the internet opened up a new world and this girl in particular introduced me too many of the artist I still listen to today. The following song she told me to check out was her biggest gift though!

Dear Claudia was a pop rock song that just got embedded in my head and introduced me to the smooth vocals of Paco and the blend of dark subject matter that South FM that the band intriguingly made go down so easy! The song was about an empty soul that gave herself away to anyone devoid of self worth or any sense of self worth! The song could have easily and should have been a radio hit but I believe the subject matter held it back from the top 40 stations. Anyway here's the ear candy that gave me the thirst for this band:

Dear Claudia

Dear Claudia, you should try not to sleep with your best friends boyfriend
you've come so far since that time when you let your first boy in
and you do it so carelessly
as if you had no self esteem
a victim of apathy but you don't care what people say about you
I will let you in before you break yourself

It's true that you like to sleep around
enjoy it with your backside on the ground
but you should know that its not your fault
your father killed himself

Dear Claudia, you leave pieces of you in each bed you lay in
and when you're done there will be somebody else wearing your skin
and you do it so carelessly
as if you had no self esteem
a victim of apathy but you don't care what people say about you
I will let you in before you break yourself

Its true that you like to sleep around
enjoy it with your backside on the ground
but you should know that its not your fault
your father killed himself

I will lay your fears right here next to mine
and when we close our eyes we'll be entwined

Dear Claudia, you should try not to sleep with your best friends boyfriend
you've come so far since that time when you let your first boy in
and you do it so carelessly
as if you had no self esteem
a victim of apathy but you don't care what people say about you

Little Claudia
you must find another way
you must forgive yourself
cause its not your fault I killed myself
I will let you in before you break yourself

It's true that you like to sleep around
enjoy it with your backside on the ground
but you should know that its not your fault
your father killed himself

Little Claudia
I will forgive you

GREAT chorus!!!

This tune here doesn't have a chorus as good...but they are a band that knows how to put a good chorus in place. :grinthumb

Dear Claudia came off of the album Drama Kids! I rushed out to look for it at the Best Buy I had a short stint working in and I found one single copy. I got it wicked cheap as it was like 8 bucks and I had a decent discount on top of that. It was a no brainer to buy it. Now keep in mind I only new one track off of it and I wasn't planning on being in love with this band. I was just reeled in at that point and curious to hear more. In fact, Dear Claudia wasn't even close to representing the bands full sound. Not at all! Lastly, I didn't know that this would be the best music discovery I would ever make. The day I picked this up my life had changed:

I actually did a shorter album review than what I'll do know but the links are dead. However you can get a starter of a review for the album as I'll try to go through more song specifics in this thread as well as the best links I can get! Here's the original review!:

Yahoo has the whole album and will be my reference/standby for listing the songs! I'll post what I can for vids even if it means a rough or live version! I highly recommend going to the yahoo link for best quality though! Here's the yahoo page:

Drama Kids | SouthFM Album | Yahoo! Music

This album took me aback because I wasn't expecting what I was hearing at all. The first track was:

Thursday Night started heavier with a guitar crunch and very soothing vocal! The song develops some small layers and a subtle echos until the 48 second mark where it picks up into a dramatic burst and one of the most intriguing chorus lyrics I had ever heard. The song picks up in a chaotic mood with a distorted feel and a great buildup back into the chorus. At the 2:08 mark there is an awesomely strange guitar part with a layer of noise behind it that started the progressive impressions the album would take. The song then winds down into a great wail at the 2:40 mark and builds back up at the 2:50 mark to kick some more ass! The song then coasts with some great melodies into a great guitar buildup into the chorus where there's a great drum part! The song then kind of abruptly ends but not without showing you that you've hopped onto what will be an amazing ride!

Here's a live version with lyrics to follow! I strongly advise the yahoo link though for the best way to hear the song first!

SouthFM-Thursday Night

Here,
Have a Seat,
Wash your hands,
Rest your feet,
It might be some time before we meet again

Remember me and all that I've Said
and all that I've Done
Cause all that you have is still irrelevant
When Relevant to this world

When the dog bites then the bee stings...
conundrum to separate
talking circles, walking circles...
there is no way to separate

One of you here seems a bit distracted,
whispers in the background,
walks behind the roses,
betrays me with a kiss

drink,
take,
and then calm yourself,
nothing can be done to change this course of action

When the Dog bites then the bee stings....
a conundrum to separate
Talking circles, walking circles...
there is no way to separate

And here they come across the fields
To take me to my precious pilate
Connecting me to destiny...
...I am, I am not afraid (X4)

But in three days I will walk behind the sun
Just beyond sleep i will wake in more ways than...
...one...
...more prayer before I go
One last kiss to ease your mind

When the dog bites and the bee stings...
a conundrum to separate
Talk in circles, walk in circles...
there is no way to separate

When in winter lies the secret...
a conundrum to separate
And then summer holds the answers...
there is no way to separate

In a recent three disc set South FM has many demos of these songs worth checking out! Here's the demo of Thursday (track 7) from this rarities collection:

The next track:

Seven This track was a more steady held together track but still has a lot of layers. Like the prior track it starts out with a smooth vocal but hear Paco keeps it flowing through the track. It's a hazy vibe like traveling through clouds in slumber. The guitars even when elevated in sound and at there heaviest just seem to fluctuate easily with the realms of relaxation. Pacos vocals begin to sound like a voice calling you out of the dream. At 2:25 the song takes a Queensryche turn with the guitars and brief spoken monologue. The song becomes less and less lucid as it goes with more echoes and distortion going through. It ends with a whisper and the dream is over!

Here's an actual studio version:

SouthFM-Seven

I'm suddenly aware we might be worlds apart
figment my imagination, i feel you there
a flickering of a warmth that brings me home
a part of me that's so far away, a distant essence of myself
reminds me of familiarity, like someone i used to know
why do you feel so far away?
perhaps its all in my head, possibly me that's insane
into these waves, these silent steps i take to you
into this light, into my waves, come and crash into my soul
compensate for my hole, every step that i take brings me closer to you
you haunt my dreams, i miss you so much when i am awake
you're touching me, at times it causes me to tremble
please give to me, please open up my mind
a part of me, inside of you...fell so far away

The third track, Corporate White America (see Yahoo link for album version), returned to a more straight forward pop rock sound but like Dear Claudia told a darker tale in it's pop rock context. I love the cautionary tale told here, the scratchy tone Paco has when he sings the louder notes and I love the drumbeats in this song. It's very steady but hard hitting in the right parts.

Corporate White America

He had the car to take her places,
he had the job to buy her things,
supported her needs just like daddy did,
she never got to use her wings.

In corporate white America,
living life in magazines,
where beauty queens make all the difference,
and life is never what it seems.

She gave up dreams of being famous,
so she could be a normal wife,
spent three days locked inside a closet,
white powder scattered on the floor.

In corporate white America,
living life in magazines,
where beauty queens make all the difference,
and life is never what it seems.

A tragic loss on Sunday morning,
her body bruised and ached with pain,
she took his gun when he was sleeping,
the shot rang out at four A.M.

In corporate white America,
living life in magazines,
where beauty queens make all the difference,
and life is never what it seems.

Appropriately this is followed by the aforementioned Dear Claudia which is also a pop rock tale about a damaged figure. Here's Dear Claudia again:

Dear Claudia (Studio)

Dear Claudia, you should try not to sleep with your best friends boyfriend

your father killed himself

and when you're done there will be somebody else wearing your skin

The next song, My Sanity (see Yahoo link for album version), is the song on the album that is much bigger than it sounds upon first listen. One thing you may notice about this album is a lot of the songs don't have a traditional verse chorus verse structure. That to me signifies the progressive qualities contained. It's a trippy wave of guitar sound that takes you through the song and the guitar loops through some spacy sounds while Paco sings his smooth tone as he accentuates the right parts throughout. It has no real chorus but it does have ebbs and flows throughout. I really do like this song and it has a cool peak at the 45 second mark. Pure sonic heaven at just under three minutes!

SouthFM-My Sanity

So let me have my sanity
because I'm not the same
since I lost my mind
and from this moment on
we will talk in turns
we will walk in lines
we will bide our time
making ourselves well
just across the sky
underneath the waves
in between the hours
of our darkest days
we will greet the space
in arms of loving grace
can i get through to you?
in my silent way
before you lose your mind
before you become me
before we become one
before we lose the sun
in the silent calm

Not sure what to think about Seven. I may have to let that one grow on me a bit. But the rest of it was pretty cool!

The next track, As You Dream, is a dreamy lullaby with acoustic strings being plucked while Paco lulls you into a meditative state. The inaudible chatter in the background is just one more progressive element that inhibits the album. This is a short simple melody but it's one of my favorite tracks as it's so weird and comforting at the same time.

SouthFM-As You Dream

You've got your whole life ahead of you
don't you get caught in the masquerade
you're going to find the surprise in the crackerjack box is a useless thing
close your eyes
forget all the worrying
dream sweet dreams about all the things you can be
pull me close
I'll be here when you awake
when you're off in unconsciousness I'll be here watching you sleep
as you dream
and in the aftermath of your slumber
I will sit and watch you wake
you've got your whole life ahead of you don't you get caught in the masquerade
