Starts off okay and then just gets lost and makes no sense. He's addressing one person and then later on sings "Take a chance on us". Who's the us? And what is a Roman wilderness of pain? Then he's in a gold mine, on a blue bus, and then suddenly someone is killing his family. Sorry I just to see the connection. Maybe I didn't do enough acid when listening to the Doors to "get" them, because that stuff is way beyond smoking a doob and getting it.:D It could be that I'm not poetic enough and like my songs to have a point and progress from point a to point b. And have them make sense. I'm too literal I guess.

I can't disagree with you there! LOL! Probably need to eat some peyote and have this song on repeat for three days to finally "get" what he is saying... :D but I do like things that take some time to try and figure out, and are a bit cryptic. Roman wilderness of pain is my favorite lyric from that song. My friend and I were talking long ago, we speculated it probably refers to the current American society. I'm not sure about the gold mine, but the blue bus: correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the blue bus pretty much symbolize droppin some LSD? Sometimes I like to just chill out and watch something (like a Darren Aronofsky film) or listen to some music that is pretty far out. Anyways!
BTW I won't pick apart Springsteen, Neil Young and Van Morrisson, because I like them too much! We can definitely agree on that!! :cheers2

^^I like the way both you and Kuaizi have handled yourselves in this little exchange, professional with nothing personal and no hard feelings.

They way I love to see disagreements resolved even if both parties keep their initial positions regarding the bands in question.

:cheers2 gentlemen.

Thanks LG! :****:

it is your opinion that they are prog since you agree with someone else's opinion, but just because you contain some elements of a genre does not make you that label.also lose the condescending tone.

There was no condescending tone I was answering your comment about "that would be mislabeling them". Thought I would try to give you an explaination of why they are considered prog by myself and quite a few articles and books I've read on the subject. Doesn't mean I don't respect your opinion just don't agree with it.

@ I agree AK, your post was well written and I thought it summed things up rather succinctly myself, I didn't detect any condescending tones at all.

my bad man. I know it is hard to convey tone through text.

I can see why people would label them that, but it still is mislabeling them since they are not a prog band. They may contain elements of it, but that still does not make them one.

Pantera contained some thrash elements in their music, but they were not really a thrash band. They were groove metal.

Samething with Lamb of God.

The Melvins contain elements of hardcore punk in their music, but that does not make them hardcore punk.

Radiohead is an alternative rock band which is what they are labeled the majority of the time.

Yeah I get your point too and agree with your point on the Melvins. Still sticking to my point on Radiohead but yeah I've got a bunch of Radohead fans as friends who are all indie people and hate when I label any of their bands as prog(Sigur Ros, Explosions of the Sky, Mogwai etc). Prog always has this negative association and it shouldn't. Yeah Radiohead are an alternative band first but lots of bands have more than one label. :D Heck I'm sure Thom would kick my ass if I called his band prog!

I guess we agree to disagree, no problem with that. All part of the music world and why I like to talk about it! :grinthumb

Well this is the place to talk about it! :grinthumb But I'm mulling this around in my own head, and I don't see Radiohead as prog either....KISS isn't a prog band because they made the Elder or have elements of prog on Destroyer...Aerosmith wouldn't be a space rock band for having elements of it on Get Your Wings....Emerson Lake and Palmer are not a pop band because they made Love Beach.

I don't know.

I really don't see a negative assocatiation with prog. Any person who gives it one IMO is an idiot haha. The reason I wouldn't call them prog is because to me they are not complex at all. I compare them to some of the prog metal bands I listen to or some of the metal bands that have some prog elements in their music. Also when I compare them to bands like Rush, Yes, Pink Floyd, etc, I don't see them being even remotely compelx compared to them.

I guess crossover prog fits them the best, but even then I have a hard time labeling them anything but alternative rock since when I think prog I think of musicians with great technical abilities that incorporate their skills into their songs.

It has to be the Beatles, for a very simple reason that has nothing to do with the quality of their music...This is simply that no band or artist in history deserves the praise that they receive. The pedestal that people have put them on is just so high that no one could possibly live up to it. Same goes for Shakespeare. In the literary community, you can essentially be excommunicated for saying anything even mildly negative about Shakespeare. All that is really neither here nor there, though.
