I think Radiohead have quiet a bit of substance and great lyrics but "uparalleled complexity" is where I'll have to disagree. I think they are in fact paralleled and surpassed by quite a few artists. In the grand scheme of things they are certainly above average but nowhere near the creme de la creme if you ask me.

Outside of the realms of prog few rock bands have used things like time signature and key changes to such effect. Just try counting the beat in this

I will make a quick point here, although we are called "Classic Rock Forums" and it encompasses a huge amount of our music content, we are also a general music forum going back to the classical music era(which I love) and up to the present, including the new bands and sub-genres that have been created over the years.

I understand what Mud is saying, many young people do feel people of our generation hang on to past glories and bands for too long, at the expense of checking out bands that they think are very good and worth listening to.

As I have said before, I love all the old classic 60's & 70's bands I grew up with, that won't change no matter what anyone says. But even I will admit that sometimes people overpraise them at times.

LG thank you. You just explained it for me haha.

I like many of the bands that are considered classic rock, but they are all extremely overrated for the most part.

Oh my dear....I really don't think you know as much about the many many assorted musical genres as you think you do. Adding more beats to a song doesn't make it more complex, it just makes it busier (or if you ask me, cluttered and thumping) and there really are plenty of artists out there outside of progressive music that write far more complex songs than that. Besides, even if a song is super complex like that particular example you posted that doesn't make it automatically good. I like Radiohead but that song emitted an odor from my computer. If it's that's any indication of what "Hail To The Thief" is like as an album then I can understand why LG doesn't like it.

Adding more notes is exactly what makes music more complex? And no, it doesn't make the music good necessarily but that wasn't the aim of that arguement, it was to suggest that Radiohead's music 'does' have substance.

As for what makes a band good I think that revolves around people liking it. I mean you may not like a band or a song but if a lot of people who know a lot of music really like it then there is a good chance it's good music.

Eg. Genesis; despite Sal's best efforts I cannot stand their music but I know that they have a huge fan base who know a lot of music and they don't just like Genesis but consider them the best band ever. You really have to respect that.

Same goes for Radiohead. There are a lot of people, like me, who hold them in the highest regard, that must count for a lot.
