The violence of Careful With that Axe, Eugene, the tender ballads such as Green Is The Colour and Stay, soundscapes like Mudmen and Main Theme from More, not to mention the atonal insanity of Saucerful of Secrets. Oh yeah, and they continued to play Interstellar Overdrive and Astronomy Domine at their live shows for years after Syd's departure.

Piper was and still is an amazing album, and the fact that Syd's shadow inspired some of their greatest songs and continues to haunt the band 30- 40 years on, is a testament to his genius and influence.

The Wall will end up be in the "forget" basket long before the above-mentioned ones ever will:):)!

To each his/her own. Syd's Floyd and Roger's Floyd were two completely different sounding bands, each standing upon their own merits.

There were three eras of PF when I look back, the formative years with Syd when he was still able to function normally, then Roger took over the main songwriting job right up to Final Cut, and then David led the band up until they stopped touring.

I simply will never accept that one good album with Syd, is the equal to what made Pink Floyd a Legendary rock band, it wasn't PIper that did that no matter how you slice it. DSOTM is the single most important album PF ever released, I consider it far more influential than Piper and more enjoyable musically as well.

That is the way I will always look at it, and one reason all the Syd and Piper fanatics irritate me (not in this forum) is they put Piper at the top of the PF list in all categories which seems elitist to me ignoring the reality of the bands legacy.

I am done with this topic, and I still enjoy Piper myself, just don't give it the status some others do, which is their right of course.:grinthumb

Agreed. I enjoy all of Pink Floyd, except of course for the final three albums, which is a completely seperate argument altogether, and one I am not prepared to discuss at the moment,

But we are here to celebrate the music and so we shall!:)

For the Syd fans:)

I love all things Floyd.

Syd, Roger, Rick, Nick and David.

Not much, not to like.

The REAL Floyd started off as a psychedelic band "par eccellenza", but they wimped out...UNLIKE other more valid bands like Grateful Dead...NO margin of comparison at all between the careers of those 2 bands:):)

I've loved Pink Floyd since I picked up Dark Side of the Moon. I even like some of their songs off of Wish You Were Here and yes even The Wall. I was introduced to the early Pink Floyd just recently.

I got into a discussion on Floyd with my dad and brother one day and they told me about how great their early stuff is, especially with Syd Barrett. I downloaded Piper at the Gates of Dawn off of Itunes and I am now hooked on all things Syd. He truly was a musical genius that had a genuine talent for songwriting.

Of course looking at pictures, I just can't take my eyes off of Syd. I've seen some good looking guys before but Syd has to be the most beautiful man I have ever seen! He could have been a model, he was so gorgeous!
