Well the saxophone certainly LOOKS a great instrument !!
Hats off to everyone who have contributed some great sax moments. King Crimson and 21st century schizoid man....legendary !!! "Urgent" by Foriegner...the Colliseum,Mott the Hoople ,Bowie tracks etc etc all classic stuff......proving that the saxophone can fit in with classic rock quite nicely at times :D
I did ask ...cool or uncool ? so it was good to hear Tomcats view.
A lot of people love and remember the sax solo in "Baker street" by Gerry Rafferty [R.i.p ]....but tend to forget that there is also a great overlooked guitar solo
Getting back to my original comments.....has the saxophone gone out of fashion? As all these classics are from late 60s to 80s ?

Just to show that good creative sax based music did make it into the modern age here's a great 90's band that had a great modern Jazz fusion:

Morphine-All Wrong

Morphine-Cure For Pain

Morphine-Buena

I live in Buffalo, NY
When I was younger in my teens through my early 20's all that ruled my life was hard rock, metal, & some southern rock. I hated the use of saxophone in songs (so I really had a dislike for Springsteen!). My complaint was that why use a sax when the same solo could be done on an electric guitar & it would sound 10x better! That was my thought back then,I wanted...LOUD screaming guitars on songs not a horn! Even when the Stones 'Let's Spend the Night Together' movie came out in 1982,I loved the movie but would have loved to have heard another Keith or Woody solo then having Ernie Watts walk out onstage during songs to blow out a solo on his sax.

Then one day it hit me in the 80's...Sax sounded Great!! I realized that it really gave songs a real rock & roll feel. I think it may have started for me on Johnny Thunders cover of the the Shangri La's "Give Her a Great Big Kiss" but at that point I really discovered that I loved sax. By then I became a pretty big fan of Springsteen & I was noticing the use of sax on songs from artists like Alice Cooper, David Bowie, David Johansen, Lou Reed, Hanoi Rocks... Michael Monroe played some kick ass sax throughout Johnny Thunders 'Que Serra Serra' album. In the late 80's until his death in '91 Thunders hooked up with a sax player named Jamey Heath & there are a couple of acoustic shows released as imports with just Thunders, guitarist Steve Klasson, & Heath on Sax which are unbelievable shows because of Heath's sax playing (sadly he passed away of a heroin od in the 90's but the wild thing was he never touched the stuff while with Thunders)

Yes Bucky....HANOI ROCKS and Mike Monroe are well worth a mention !:grinthumb
I saw them live in about 83 in Nottingham Uk, there was a lot of hype about this band being huge and the next big thing. Sure they were good live lots of energy, really up for it .Monroe a good frontman and all the girls loved him. I enjoyed the gig....but never in real honesty took to the band or their records. They werent heavy enough for me, but as you say Monroe is a nifty sax player !!

My husband's a Morphine fan. Not exactly my taste but I do like this song.

Now if we're talking songs with a sax, this is what came up in my mind!

Like the MORPHINE tracks by the way....

I must admit a bit of saxophone on some classic 70s punk works wonders....heres 2 of my favorites.
The excellent DESTROY ALL MONSTERS.from Detroit...well underated band featuring the gorgeous singer Niagara and the much loved UK punks X RAY SPEX
