When I was younger in my teens through my early 20's all that ruled my life was hard rock, metal, & some southern rock. I hated the use of saxophone in songs (so I really had a dislike for Springsteen!). My complaint was that why use a sax when the same solo could be done on an electric guitar & it would sound 10x better! That was my thought back then,I wanted...LOUD screaming guitars on songs not a horn! Even when the Stones 'Let's Spend the Night Together' movie came out in 1982,I loved the movie but would have loved to have heard another Keith or Woody solo then having Ernie Watts walk out onstage during songs to blow out a solo on his sax.
Then one day it hit me in the 80's...Sax sounded Great!! I realized that it really gave songs a real rock & roll feel. I think it may have started for me on Johnny Thunders cover of the the Shangri La's "Give Her a Great Big Kiss" but at that point I really discovered that I loved sax. By then I became a pretty big fan of Springsteen & I was noticing the use of sax on songs from artists like Alice Cooper, David Bowie, David Johansen, Lou Reed, Hanoi Rocks... Michael Monroe played some kick ass sax throughout Johnny Thunders 'Que Serra Serra' album. In the late 80's until his death in '91 Thunders hooked up with a sax player named Jamey Heath & there are a couple of acoustic shows released as imports with just Thunders, guitarist Steve Klasson, & Heath on Sax which are unbelievable shows because of Heath's sax playing (sadly he passed away of a heroin od in the 90's but the wild thing was he never touched the stuff while with Thunders)
