Growing up in California in the 70's the radio played a bunch of Guess Who songs.. But I started to wonder now, what they were trying to say with "American Woman". Hmmmmmm.. I don't know many Canadian women, but were they talking about feminist protesters like Jane Fonda and other female artist opposed to the war?? So many songs came out against the Vietnam war and all those draft dodgers heading to Canada..

American Woman
The Guess Who
American woman, I'm gonna mess your mind
American woman, you gonna mess your mind
American woman, I'm gonna mess your mind
American woman, I'm gonna mess your mind

Say A, say M, say E
Say R, say I, C
Say A, N

American woman, I'm gonna mess your mind
American woman, you gonna mess your mind
American woman, I'm gonna mess your mind

American woman, stay away from me
American woman, mama let me be
Don't come a hangin' around my door
I don't want to see your face no more
I got more important things to do
Than spend my time growin' old with you
Now woman, I said stay away
American woman, listen what I say

American woman, get away from me
American woman, mama let me be
Don't come a knockin' around my door
Don't want to see your shadow no more
Colored lights can hypnotize
Sparkle someone else's eyes
Now woman, I said get away
American woman, listen what I say-ay-ay-ay

American woman, said get away
American woman, listen what I say
Don't come a hangin' around my door
Don't want to see your face no more
I don't need your war machines
I don't need your ghetto scenes
Colored lights can hypnotize
Sparkle someone else's eyes
Now woman, get away from me
American woman, mama let me be

Go, gotta get away, gotta get away now go, go, go
I'm gonna leave you woman
Gonna leave you woman
Bye-bye bye-bye, bye-bye, bye-bye
You're no good for me
I'm no good for you
Gonna look you right in the eye
Tell you what I'm gonna do
You know I'm gonna leave
You know I'm gonna go
You know I'm gonna leave
You know I'm gonna go-o, woman
I'm gonna leave you woman
Goodbye American woman

Or maybe they didn't like American Groupies..

Depending on the interview you hear or read will show different results for what they supposedly meant in the lyrics of this song. I've seen many-a-reports that this was an anti-war, anti-American song. Other times, I've heard interviews with Cummings or Bachman or someone else in the group saying "we love(d) American women, this isn't anti-woman, or anti-American, etc blah blah blah". Who the hell knows. Could be a groupie thing, could be a war thing, could be an anti-American thing. We'll never know anymore.

As far as the band goes, this is NOT "The Guess Who". There is nothing about this band that even remotely resembles The Guess Who, other than that they still have the original drummer. The rest of the cast is 4th, 5th or 6th generation vocals, guitars, keys and bass.

Now, that wouldn't be the end of the world if they at least SOUNDED like The Guess Who, but their current sound isn't the least bit like the Guess Who that most of us know. Unlike a band such as Foreigner that also only has one original member (guitarist Mick Jones), at least Foreigner has stayed true to the sound and playing style of the classic lineups from the 70's and 80's. This version of the Guess Who doesn't look or sound even remotely like the classic lineups.
