OK, maybe I don't hold the same reverence for the anthem that you do Lynch, though I'm dual nationality USA/UK, so I actually have two anthems to worry about!!... but at the end of the day it's just a tune, though one that commands some respect, but it's not like flag-burning or something, which would totally madden me, if a guy/band wants to put a different spin on it I don't see that as disrespectful or unpatriotic. To me it should be open to many different interpretations and styles of performance, otherwise they may as well just pass a law saying that from now on an old video of Elvis Presley singing it wearing his U S Army uniform has to be played on the JumboTron at every sporting event.

It definitely wasn't the absolute worst I've ever seen, however what were they thinking "stepping out of the box" like that? One would think that after so many artists who have done the same with that song and consequently been heavily criticized for doing so that they wouldn't have tried to be unique and just given it a go as it should have been done. But I guess there's no rule written in stone for performing it and I can appreciate that they tried to bring their own flavor to it. Unfortunately it just didn't work for me personally.

I don't see how that was bad. It sounded like The Fray singing the National Anthem. If you know the groups sound they adapted it to the anthem and they definitely weren't off key or anything that would signify bad singing. :)
I actually agree with you, I don't see what's so bad about it.. sounds good to me lol.

Now this is bad :peek

Instruments sound...honky and unbalanced.
It sounds like The Fray, and people shouldn't have expected any more or less from the way it was sung.
They did it in a mellow manner, too.

I've heard much worse.
Aguilera can't sing without over-belching and elongating every line.
Then again she's been doing that since the start.

Yeah, while I like a good portion of Aguileras music that's one of the things I actually liked about The Frays rendition. For once it was pleasantly simple and understated rather than over the top and dramatic. One might call the change of tone of the Frays version self indulgent but to me these Divas trying to show off their pipes are way more self indulgent and obnoxious. I don't love The Fray version and will never listen to it again likely but I haven't had a need to listen to any rendition twice. I couldn't give two shits about most sports anyway and don't see a sporting event to be any more patriotic than a concert, etc. Wouldn't find it odd not to even have it played at one as competitive sports isn't my idea of America specifically unless it's a world event like the Olympics. Just my opinion though. :)
