.... The Sound!
Hi.
Some of you will recognize me, right?? ….so where have I been, and what/who the hell is ‘TMG’?
Good question! … well it’s a bit of a long story.
I first joined CRF 4 years ago, but then sometime last year I had a major PC/security/identity-theft/virus-attack crisis, and so I was advised to change all my forum/email passwords etc, and I even had to create new email addresses, but then for some reason I couldn’t re-register on here in my old The Sound guise, so I spoke to Sooty, and we tried to sort something out to get me registered again in my old ID, but it didn’t work as for some reason I couldn’t edit my profile, so I went away, again! , but now I decided it might be nice to come back, so here I am again, and that’s about it in a nutshell.
Very briefly… I’m dual British/USA citizenship, I was born and grew up in the north-west of England, graduated from university and went to work for Her Majesty’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London, and then at the age of 24 I came to live and work in the USA where I lived in Washington D.C. for the next 17 years, working as assistant to the social secretary at the British Embassy in D.C. - I got married, settled down, and in time we had 3 children, two sons, who are now aged 14 and 17, and a daughter who is now aged 15.
Then in 2009 we moved back to live over in the UK for a while.
Finally we moved back here to the USA about 3 years ago, and we’ve now settled in New York City, which is actually my wife’s home town, her family are all New Yorkers, and we now have an apartment here in Manhattan, so the 5 of us, well, 6 really, along with our little Jack Russell dog Rosie who's probably the most important member of the family!
My wife has for over 20 years been a professional orchestral musician/classical violinist, and she has at various times played with 4 different professional symphony orchestras, and so she traveled quite a bit, though she’s retired from performing and now she just teaches music privately from here at home in New York where she has violin, piano, and composition/music theory students, mostly youngsters, which she finds very rewarding.
The past 3 years I have basically been a at stay-at-home dad, though as our kids are getting older, and our eldest son will be starting college next year, I now need to find more to keep myself busy, so I just this summer started working 3 or 4 days a week for my brother-in-law, who owns/runs a hotel here in Manhattan, and so I guess I’m sort of his ‘general assistant without an official job title’ which basically involves everything from me arranging food/groceries deliveries, building maintenance, and a lot of delivering and collecting hotel guests to and from the three main NY/NJ area airports.
My musical likes?, well like I assume most people on here, there are probably literally 100’s of bands and artists who I like, after 40 years as a music fan my CD/LP collection shelves take up an entire wall-and-a-half pretty much from floor to ceiling in my man-cave.
My Top 25 or so would be read something like Bruce Springsteen - Bruce is probably my #1 all time, above all others - the most gigs seen and the most albums owned of any artist I know, especially since this avalanche of 'official' Springsteen bootleg albums/downloads began, but also I'm a truly massive fan of Joni Mitchell (she'd easily be my #2) and also Van Morrison, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Mark Knopfler, Tom Petty, Pink Floyd, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, David Bowie, the Stones, Rush, Steely Dan, Bjork, Neil Young, Supertramp, U2, Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Coldplay, The Corrs, R.E.M. Aerosmith, the Eagles.
But really it’s an endless list of ‘likes’ that I have, and there’s dozens of people I haven’t even mentioned whose music I love.
I'm also a big time concert goer, pretty much everybody who's anybody plays NYC on their tours, so I go to quite a lot of gigs.
I play acoustic guitar, reasonably well, and also piano, not quite so well.
Also, I listen to a LOT of classical music, possibly almost as much as rock, and I try to listen to some every day, I always have found classical is just great relaxing therapy, though obviously my wife’s musical influence is at work there, also I like to listen to quite a lot of jazz when the mood takes me.
Sports in my other great love...I used to spend a lot of time posting in the sports threads on here back in the day.
Okay, nothing more to say really, so I hope anyone here who remembers me is keeping healthy, and anyone who doesn’t remember me, well, now you have my life story! – sorry ‘bout that!
