This isn't really a game, but it is about music, so I reckon this is the best place to put it.

Some of the younger poster may have not been born in a time when there wasn't cds, so apologies to those folks.

The topic of this thread is for you to relate how you made your transition to CDs.

I mean, let's face it. This was no small undertaking, was it? You all remember it, I'm pretty sure.

Hundreds of albums to replace. Where do I start? What do I go after first?

My first CD purchases were from one of those 'Twelve CDs for a penny things.
I don't remember all 12, but 2 I know for sure were SRV's In Step, and Tommy Conwell And The Young Rumblers,

Then there was "Do I really want this on CD? Do I like this album that much?

For me, a few that didn't make the cut were Pete Townshend's Empty Glass, Rod Stewart's G.H., The Go Go's Beauty And The Beat, and BTO's G. H.

Plus, the unexpected added bonus of rediscovering bands you hadn't heard for a while.

I rediscovered KISS when I found Rock & Roll Over in the $3.00 bin. I'd gotten away from them when the were having their identity crisis, so hearing R & R O was fresh all over again.

So anyhow, there you go. Share your stories if you want.

Moved this thread to the "Rock Lounge" since it is music related and open for discussion *which means your posts go towards a post count*.

I was really pissed off when CD's became the big thing. I already had a pretty big Vinyl collection along with a decent amount of 8 tracks and cassettes. I liked cassettes because they were easy to record to. I had bought a new car in 1991, and it had a CD player........so I had to start buying them.

I remember buying my first CD in 1991. The very first CD I purchased was a Michael Jackson CD, "Dangerous". From there I started collecting new and old music. I have spent a fortune in CD's and now I collect mp3's ;)

I had about 300 lps and 200 cassettes when cds first started coming out. At first eventho I heard about the excellent sound quality I stayed away from them until '88 or so,cos the price here in Canada was outrageous (something like $35+tax for a cd), then when the price started going down I bought my first one. Since then I got rid of my lps and my cassettes (always hated cassettes) and replaced everything on CD.

My first CD ever was this....

After vinyl I never considered replacing my LP collection. I dabbled in cassettes to have something in the car besides the radio. Rock bands like Whitesnake, Skid Row, Mr. Big, Lynch Mob, Ozzy and some metal like Metallica, Pantera, Testament, Anthrax and Megadeth.
Oddly enough, when I got into CDs I went back to classic rock, The Beatles, The Stones, Hendrix, SRV. And then some new stuff like Drowning Pool and Corrosion Of Conformity.
A big change in my CD collection came when I got a turntable with a USB port. I put over two hundred LPs onto CDs. These were mostly non US releases from the seventies that would be hard to find on CD.
Recently I started buying CDs (Amazon) from the 90s and 2000s like Monster Magnet, Chevelle, Down, I Mother Earth, Disturbed, Tantric and Three Days Grace.

Have you ever regretted getting rid of your LP's? It seems like they are coming back in fashion and a big item for collectors.

I lost all my vinyl when there was a fire at my folk's house.

I never really mourned the loss of my records.

Compared to what I could have lost, a couple boxes of record means nothing.

Anyhow, all my records were at Mom's because I'd already converted over to CDs.

My transition to CDs did not occur until the early 1990's... In the vinyl thread, I took a pic of my "official" LP collection and looking back compared to what it was before...it had been shaved down considerably having traded a load to a local shop called Moby Disc. I've had misgivings since...

The first CD I bought was Zeppelin's fourth album and it took off from there but slowly. Yes, they were ultra expensive when they first hit the streets but I did not dive in without hesitation due to financial considerations. Another factor that played into it was that I reckoned the music labels were cashing in on the new technology with nary a thought about mixing them properly or whatnot. It was in its infancy thinking they'd get it together later on as far as quality and presentation is concerned.

I have to add that I never really got into cassette releases since I was heavy into the artwork side of LPs and I truly detested the 8-track. Thank goodness the latter was at its deathbed when I was really getting into music. With the former, I was into the tape trading circles so I built up a good archive of "live" recordings some of which are low gens. I still have the tapes I recorded off the Sunday night "King Biscuit Flower Hour" shows. I never transferred them to discs though opting to use DATs instead.
