Enjoyed the writeup, Jay. Actually listening to Dio today, coincidentally.
Loved loved loved your writeup on this amazing album.
Not sure I agree with what you said about the later Dio albums but thanks for the feedback.Enjoyed the writeup, Jay. Actually listening to Dio today, coincidentally.
I remember this coming out, and I was kind of disappointed with it. I thought it was a real step down from the previous two albums. Dio/Viv were already having problems, and while we didn't know it at the time, it would later explain why I felt the way I did about the album.
Still, it has a number of excellent tracks, and has aged pretty well, actually. Not sure if it has to do with the absolute shiite that Dio would later release, but I think it's aged well on its own strength.
Was lucky enough to see them twice on this tour. They came to Providence in Sept '85 (Rough Cutt opened) with Vivian, and they returned in June '86 (Accept opened!!) with Craig Goldie on guitar.

I don't have an answer on why it it wasn't successful. My only guess is that the David Wayne fans were willing to give Blessing In Disguise a chance, but perhaps were not convinced by Mike Howe. Not sure how you couldn't be.
I actually came into Metal Church with Blessing In Disguise. I think The Human Factor is unbelievable. Perhaps a couple of filler tracks on Side 2, but what album doesn't have that.
I remember that I had to order Hanging In The Balance on Import, as you couldn't get it locally here. Hanging In The Balance may even be better. I actually rate Blessing In Disguise (which I like a LOT) as the weakest of the three original Howe albums.
Saw the Operation RnR tour at Great Woods (and at Brendan Byrne). I really enjoyed their set.
It’s possible I’m misremembering. Perhaps it was available in other countries before the US release. I guess I’m not sure now.Weird that you had to order Hanging in the Balance via an import company. I bought it right off the shelf on cassette when it came out.
Cool that you got to see them on the tour.
I was hooked on Mike Howe from the second I heard his vocals so I definitely would be on the opposite side of fans who couldn't get over David Wayne not being there.
