I was in high school....freshman 9th grade ...when it came out. Many of the tracks were on the radio as singles on AM and some were on FM on the late night stations that played 'deep cuts'.
I think most thought Tomorrow Never Knows (1966) was about 'eastern spiritual issues' which the Beatles had discovered (they met Maharishi later in 1967) but also that drugs were involved.
Some critics and fans think that Revolver was their best lp.
I would recommend a book by Ian McDonald called "Revolution In The Head :Beatles records and the sixties." It goes through every track the Beatles recorded and talks about the albums , cultural meanings and why the songs were written at that time. An excellent book to have if you are a Beatles fan and one of the best and influential (though McCartney has said some of his assertions are wrong).
