I, personally, love chat. With that said, I also have to think about what is good/bad for the forum. I have added chat boxes to a forum and the end result wasn't positive for the forum. People would log in and just chat and the forum itself suffered.
I also belong to other forums with chat groups and chat boxes, and the same thing happens in those forums.......at one time we had 50 people online, and all but 2 were in the chat box.
What I can do is check with the Vbulletin program add-ons and look for an instant message add-on. Currently, our Private Messages will give you a pop up notice when you have a Private Message which doesn't actually allow you to communicate in realtime. An instant message add-on would allow a realtime conversation, very similar to yahoo, msn, etc. instant messengers. I wont promise this as an addition to the forum, but I will sure check it out and see if it is possible to add.
The visitor's messages is the closest thing we have to realtime communication, and to make that work you have to have two windows open. It is slower than instant messengers.
