Hmmm....never heard of Murray Head at all ,but heard of They Might Be Giants .....though not heard either track on the radio.
Not heard Iron Maiden nor that Van Halen track either but when I listen to radio its classic rock or oldies stations. TBH never really heard an Iron Maiden song/lp until about 2015 when this young guy who worked for me burned their cds for me. They were never on my radar in the old days. Van Halen of course were on pop rock radio but I never really cared for them.

A song that has always stayed and still gets played on radio......Steely Dan..."the perfect musical antiheroes for the seventies".

It's interesting the variation in songs that mean something in this thread- being honest, there are only 25-30 that i consider "life tunes". C/PM chose Murray Head(a fine actor on stage & screen)....I really enjoy his work and 'Say It Ain't So Joe'...is a song of quality. Demons And Wizards by Uriah Heep...I'd say I still play that album twice a month.....that's gone on for over 50 years!

To be honest, I don't know if I'm following the topic correctly, the only place those songs have stayed is in my head, back in the 80s with Murray Head and must of been early 90s for They Might Be Giants, I'd hear them on the radio. I couldn't believe it when you had Incense and Peppermints along with Summer In the City together and for a long time I thought Incense and Peppermints was an 80s song until one day a friend I was driving to school put them on and he said it's a 60s song. The same thing happened when I must of heard "Summer in the City", though found out sometime in the early 90s that it's a 60s song.
The other song from the 60s which I thought was done later is "Friday on my mind" by the Easybeats, though there's another song from the 80s which made me think it was an 80s song, I think the other song is a Midnight Oil song "Power and the Passion", though listening to them now, I find no comparison, so I don't know why.

I guess the moral to my story as a kid in the 80s was "Don't Listen to Radio Stations" that play 60s, 70s & 80s music all jumbled in together.

I think at some point I decided to retain that Murray Head song in my head by associating songs depicting places in them. Summer In the City doesn't specify a place, though still wants to depict one as Hot, Busy, Noisy and come out at Night to a Different World.

I'm unsure if I'm following this topic correctly, some people want to move on to other songs all the time, when I want to dwell on the ones people might want to forget. Out of the 100s of CDs I've collected, there have been times I've heard something and then have tried to find that song, or just now while replying here have to write why "Friday on my Mind" reminds me of "Power and The Passion", perhaps I thought there's a lot of Power and Passion put into "Friday on my Mind".

Different songs 'stay' with different people....its all good.
I understood the thread to be songs that stayed with the rock/pop music scene in general over the years and still get played regularly and are still liked.....but music is subjective and it seems to be something for each time frame/decade and represents that era.

"it's all good" is right- makes for conversation and the flow of ideas about music.
I started the thread to indicate songs that have stayed with me through time...and are significant because of the woes or good times in my past...Don't let this dissuade you from contributing though...

"songs people want to forget "....makes for a great thread!
The Goombay Danceband for the first mention.
all content is good C/PM.

It seems though this thread could be about 'Songs That Stayed' whether you want them or not, though I understand the gist of this thread is to discuss songs which have been a part of you since childhood.

I have songs in my collection of artists which I want to forget, I'm also familiar of songs which I don't have in my collection that I've know about since childhood and then it's the radio which drags out some piece of trash I wanted to forget back in it's day only to be cringing at it once more.
