Re: "The Official" (The) Smashing Pumpkins Thread

Great write ups here Soot!!! You def do the Pumpkins some justice!

One of my favorite videos. David Bowie with special guest Billy Corgan performing All the Young Dudes and Jean Genie. It's awesome to see the respect between the two great musicians from different generations!

Thanks Kuaizi! that was a GREAT performance! Thank you very much for the contribution as I've never seen that one before! Billy's played with so many legends and it comes from being so inspired by all the greats! :grinthumb

Bury Me
62796242_f46b6b98b8.jpg

"Bury Me" is the first of the deeper cuts on the album but it was one of four songs previously recorded on a demo along with "I Am One", "Rhinocerous" and "Daydream". It has the dubious honor of being the first non-single track on a Pumpkins album but it is a track that stands out after multiple listens. First you have the tribal drums and once the guitars start off they do this cool squelchy thing in rhythm! Billy nails an awesome wail and does it again! Then there's kind of a drony ominous guitar into an awesome chugachug guitar which sounds like one guitar layered over another at 1:15. 2:05 has an awesome guitar solo! Brief but awesome and The Pumpkins have my favorite solos ever! I love the wind down for this song and the guitar from 3:28-3:55 has this great sound I can't explain! It's just kind of spacy, loopy and a poppier element than anything on Gish thus far! :grinthumb Then with a last blast of guitar the songs fades into a dreamy blur! :grinthumb Oh, and James Iha has a cool undecipherable vocal part (until you see the lyrics) at 1:27!

Bury Me

Born

Like an angel

We're in love
We're in love

Shared your kisses, take your heart
Buried me and it hurts

I love my sister so (chain unchain)
She don't smother me (Jane unchain my chain)
I played the spades I know (unchain)
I'm a Jack of all trades
Won't you bury me?

Once you see her
Point inside (hide, hide)
Some things you just can't hide
If you see her
Tell me why (hide, hide)
Why won't she come outside?

[solo]

If you see her
Tell me why (hide, hide)
Why won't she come outside
Once you see her
Point inside (hide, hide)
Some things you just can't hide

[solo]

She waits bury me
She will bury me

Here's the demo I was referring to as well:

Crush
(cool psychedelic vid which match their style for the album)

You wrap your arms around
A feeling that surrounds
Like liquid peppermint
Just taste the drinks that she served

And this feeling shivers down your spine
Love comes in colors I can't deny
All that matters is love, love, your love

You're sleeping in your bed
Just rest your weary head
Maybe you shouldn't care
Throw away those dreams and dare

And I wonder if it matters to me
Love comes in colors I can't deny
All that shimmers is love, love, your love
Your love
Your love

This is a great acoustic track to slow the album down. These are songs where Billy's vocals shine because they are so real and he can deliver emotion with the simplest of phrasing and the slightest crack of his voice. I love the barest of Pumpkin tracks like this! Also it's song like this where the group delivers simple but great lines like "Love Comes in Colors I can't Deny!" A track that probably falls under fans radar but still a simple treat nonetheless and a proper break in the album! :cheers2

Crush (Live)

I just think that sometimes you need a break from something and therefore you end a particular era for a band. When you come back to it as in most things artistic you get to come at it fresh, reinvigorated and with a new perspective on where to take the band. SP has always been Billy's baby so he will always try to take it in as many different directions as he can artistically and to the highest standards! :cheers2

Suffer
Removed dead video

All that you suffer is all that you are
All that you smother is all that you are
And you're saying you're seeing, you're saying who you are
What takes meaning is cleaning the meaning of who you are

All may say
I will dream
All may say

All of your struggles beneath your disguise
Drink from the reasons that hold you alive
'Til we're safe from the wounds of desire and pain
You must rise from the mounds of desire and change

Too late to discover peace of mind
Too late to recover me

All you see and all you breathe and all you cease to be
Taken down your only son and what he means to me
Your dream will be
To dream with me

Will you wait? Yes I will, I will wait for you
To cleanse your life takes more than time
Take what you want
Take all of it

Too late to discover peace of mind (have no peace of mind)
To late to recover

This is a track that starts off slow, dark with almost like a blankly stated tribal chant but as it goes it turns into a sweet, softly sung trippy ballad. I love the lyrics to this track! Smashing Pumpkins are the most philosophical, quotable band I know! I love the soft flute section in this. This is a great unique track from the band! :grinthumb

Snail
hqdefault.jpg

All your seven dreams
Look close son and you'll believe
As your things come undone
See you are the only one

Flower, saves the hour that Jane awaits
Waiting, waiting for your wake
I'll wait

When you wake up you're awake
Throwing your life away
Sunday, saw her coming home
Saw her snail
What you wait for?

Flower, the pain will wash away, away
When the sun shines climbs through your window into your bed

When you wake up you're awake
Throwing your life away
Sunday, I saw her coming home
I saw her snail
Yeah in my home

Flower save the hour
Flower away

What you wait for? ahhh
Flower takes the sunshine
Flower takes the sunshine
Flower

This track is a basic laid back guitar driven track that starts slighter faster than a "snails" pace with Billy softly singing the verse and moves fluidly along from there riding it's melody with ease and grace.
