Re: Should the Rolling Stones continue to tour? Is it a generation dependent question
Starman:
I certainly would not pay the ridiculous amount of money they ask to see their shows these days.
I have a problem with the ticket prices being asked for concerts as well these days. But the artists argue that they don't make the money from record/CD sales these days because of the growth of downloading. I don't know what the answer is - other than that everyone will logically continue to charge what the market will bear.
Through out their history the Stones have been like 5 different bands.
I don't know about five. I have noticed a difference in kind between their music prior to "Jumping Jack Flash"/"Beggars Banquet" and their music thereafter. That was approximately when Keith discovered open tuning for his guitar. To some extent, they seem to have become "locked" into a certain sound since then. (I also think Led Zeppelin became locked into a certain sound, which I didn't like as much, beginning with "Houses of the Holy".)
The other part of me realizes that compared to "Let It Bleed", anything post Some Girls (and many would say even that album) has been a complete joke.
I started hearing that 25 years ago mainly from people younger than myself - but it leaves me bewildered. I really enjoy many of their post "Some Girls" tracks including:
She's So Cold
Start Me Up
Harlem Shuffle
One Hit (to the Body)
Mixed Emotions
Almost Hear You Sigh
Blinded by Love
Love Is Strong
My own rating of Stones' albums up to the mid-nineties is as follows:
Flowers
December's Children
Rolling Stones Now
Sticky Fingers
Beggars' Banquet
Let It Bleed
Their Satanic Majesties Request
Steel Wheels
Dirty Work
Between the Buttons(U.S.)
Some Girls
Out of Our Heads
Voodoo Lounge
Tattoo You
Black and Blue
Emotional Rescue
Aftermath(U.S.)
England's Newest Hitmakers
Exile on Main Street
12 X 5
Goat's Head Soup
It's Only Rock 'n Roll
Undercover
In fact, I find it somewhat annoying when music fans don't go beyond "Beggars Banquet", "Let It Bleed", "Sticky Fingers" and "Exile on Main Street" when discussing/considering the Stones.
