Should the Rolling Stones continue to tour? Is it a generation dependent question?

Should the Rolling Stones continue to tour?

  • I'm too young to have been a fan prior to 1980. It's ridiculous for them to continue to tour though.

I feel that if you can still deliver a show, no matter what you look like or how you have to get on stage, then go for it! Rock that Stage :D

Although, I also believe that if a band decides to retire, they should. It is sad for the band's fans to say "goog bye" to their idols, but that is how things go.

I think Les Paul played every Sunday night at some club in N.Y. until shortly before he died earlier this year at 94. He played while sitting in a chair, but he was out there.

I saw him in '94 at The House of Blues here in L.A. when it was billed as "An Evening with Les Paul and Friends". Those friends being fellow Gibson players like Steve Vai, Slash, CSN, Jeff Healy and more. Great show! And after the show Les sat in his chair on stage and signed autographs for anyone who wanted one. I was amazed how many people showed up with albums and guitars for him to sign.

Starman:

I certainly would not pay the ridiculous amount of money they ask to see their shows these days.

I have a problem with the ticket prices being asked for concerts as well these days. But the artists argue that they don't make the money from record/CD sales these days because of the growth of downloading. I don't know what the answer is - other than that everyone will logically continue to charge what the market will bear.

Through out their history the Stones have been like 5 different bands.

I don't know about five. I have noticed a difference in kind between their music prior to "Jumping Jack Flash"/"Beggars Banquet" and their music thereafter. That was approximately when Keith discovered open tuning for his guitar. To some extent, they seem to have become "locked" into a certain sound since then. (I also think Led Zeppelin became locked into a certain sound, which I didn't like as much, beginning with "Houses of the Holy".)

The other part of me realizes that compared to "Let It Bleed", anything post Some Girls (and many would say even that album) has been a complete joke.

I started hearing that 25 years ago mainly from people younger than myself - but it leaves me bewildered. I really enjoy many of their post "Some Girls" tracks including:

She's So Cold
Start Me Up
Harlem Shuffle
One Hit (to the Body)
Mixed Emotions
Almost Hear You Sigh
Blinded by Love
Love Is Strong

My own rating of Stones' albums up to the mid-nineties is as follows:

Flowers
December's Children
Rolling Stones Now
Sticky Fingers
Beggars' Banquet
Let It Bleed
Their Satanic Majesties Request
Steel Wheels
Dirty Work
Between the Buttons(U.S.)
Some Girls
Out of Our Heads
Voodoo Lounge
Tattoo You
Black and Blue
Emotional Rescue
Aftermath(U.S.)
England's Newest Hitmakers
Exile on Main Street
12 X 5
Goat's Head Soup
It's Only Rock 'n Roll
Undercover

In fact, I find it somewhat annoying when music fans don't go beyond "Beggars Banquet", "Let It Bleed", "Sticky Fingers" and "Exile on Main Street" when discussing/considering the Stones.

Interesting thread. Reminds me of a topic I have been meaning to start a thread on. I'llhave to get to that. But to answer this question.

Yes, by all means tour as long as you are physically able to do it, put on a solid show. I have to admit to being surprised by some of the clips or their recent tours, they actually do sound good. And I love the Stones. Also, if anything happens and the Jagger/Richards dynamic isn't there, due to death, illness, what have you, they need to give it up.

But would I go to see them?

No. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

They are one of the few bands that can still pull it off.
The only question is do they like one another enough to play together these days.

I believe that the Rolling Stones still like each other .. perhaps the other members are a bit bewildered by Ron Woods ..

I'm not a huge fan so I just voted the #2 option.. They should do what they enjoy.. Screw the critics..
