SAMMY HAGAR Talks New VAN HALEN Album - Mar. 7, 2012
Former VAN HALEN singer Sammy Hagar tells Michael Christopher of The Boston Phoenix that he has yet to hear the band's entire new album, "A Different Kind Of Truth", which came out last month. "I don't listen to much new music unless I hear a new song on the radio, and the last bands that did that to me were the BLACK KEYS and KINGS OF LEON," Hagar says. "When I heard 'Tattoo', that single — and I saw the video because everybody kept sending it to me like, 'My god, have you seen this?' . . . 'Oh my god, you must be laughing your ass off!' — it wasn't a song that made me run out and buy their record. And so I haven't heard it. I haven't downloaded it, I haven't done anything. I heard another one that was kinda goofy too, and then I heard, on the radio, 'She's The Woman', and I thought that was kinda cool. That one sounds like what I would expect from VAN HALEN, a little closer to it. The other stuff didn't sound like what I was expecting, that's for sure."

Hagar, who took over the singing chores in VAN HALEN after David Lee Roth left the band, is widely considered the better singer of the two. However, Hagar never managed to dazzle the crowd quite like Roth did. After an 11-year-run with the band, Hagar was fired or he quit (depending on whom you ask).

"The difference between Dave and I in that band, besides all the other million things, is that he can't sing any of the 'Van Hagar'-era songs, "Sammy tells The Boston Phoenix. "Maybe he could do 'Finish What Ya Started', possibly — so that makes it kind of weird for [Alex and Eddie] I think to take 11 years out of that thing."

Hagar also admitted that he was initially upset at the promoters when he learned that his current band, CHICKENFOOT — which also features in its ranks former VAN HALEN bassist Michael Anthony — was booked to play in Los Angeles (June 10 at the Greek Theater) at roughly the same time as his former group (VAN HALEN will be at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on June 1 and June 9 and at the Honda Center in Anaheim on June 12).

"First I said, 'What the **** are you doing putting us the same time as VAN HALEN?' " Hagar tells The Boston Phoenix. "It's just gonna cause a needless competition between the fans, and I don't like that. I want the fans to feel like they can love VAN HALEN and that they can love CHICKENFOOT totally the same. I don't have any way of competing with those guys; you can't compete with VAN HALEN. I'm part of that legacy, how could I go out and compete with something I'm part of? I don't look at us like that, but I know some people do. You want to go see VAN HALEN one night and see us the next and compare us, you want to do that? Roll up your sleeves and come on. I welcome it, because I think this band is smokin'."

Well folks.. admit after you guys heard Tatoo you weren't all hyped up and jazzed about the new stuff.. Then you heard more songs and it was OK from then on..

I think Sammy has a good point even if some of you guys are gonna yuk about him not wanting to compete with Van Halen..
I thought he was going to say they are bigger than him name sake wise but he said it better as having "History" with Van Halen and why put the fans through a battle of who's more better..
The promoters here seem to be fueling this fire..
And it's a bad idea..

I havn't bought the Van Halen either..Not for the sake of not supporting the band.. It's just I'm sure it will end up in my collection one day along with all the other Van Halen albums I have..
Good point about Roth not being able to do the Hagar era songs.. That does limit the list of songs played when they tour..

Tattoo is not even that bad now and I was one who had an initial dislike of it. Most of the songs they put out were not that impressive first listen but it requires persistence.

^^I was never a big fan of Van Hagar anyway Slip,,,I think the best songs are from the early years with Diamond Dave on lead vocals.

So I see no limitation on the set list at all, there are plenty of great songs to choose from.

MP would attest to my dislike of the Hagar days..I too had my alligence with the original line up.. After reading Sammy's book I had a change of heart..

Sammy can play them if he wants to then, when the time is right. Besides this is a Van Halen tour, recalling their best days and really considering all the stuff Sammy's been saying would you ever expect them to play the songs he was part of?

I give Sammy credit for showing a little class about a gig on the same night in the same city and wish he would just Play his own stuff and forget about VH completely.

The reason that Van Halen today doesn't play Sammy's songs, but Sammy's Van Halen played Dave songs on the last tour, is because Roth's Van Halen is astronomically more popular than anything Sammy did with the band.

I also find it a tad funny that Sammy doesn't listen to anything if he doesn't hear it on the radio. The first thing people tend to say about rock today is you have to look past just what's on the radio.
