No one has a rough gritty growl like John Kay of Steppenwolf. Talk about a signiture sound !!

I have agree with you about John Kay. The song "The Pusher" is really intense and I don't think anyone else could pull it off as well as he did.

This is the first name that came to mind.

I just happen to have the Band on the box right now. While the Byrds and CS&N are among the best for polished group harmony, I love the "rough 'n' gruff" group harmonies of the Band.
