Roger Waters has confirmed a release date for Is This the Life We Really Want. His new studio album, the first in 25 years, is due on May 19.
The date was revealed as part of a new teaser video for the project, which you can watch above. Featured in the clip are new shots of Waters collaborating in the studio with producer Nigel Godrich, accompanied by an orchestra-washed score that’s sure to pique the interest of fans of his work with Pink Floyd on The Wall. Waters mounted a huge solo tour focused on that 1979 release a few years ago before turning his focus back to the studio.
Like The Wall, not to mention previous solo efforts like 1984’s The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking and 1987’s Radio K.A.O.S, Is This the Life We Really Want will most likely be a concept album, though few details on the record’s subject matter have surfaced. Waters originally conceived the album as an extended radio play, but Godrich – who has has previously worked with Paul McCartney and Radiohead, among others – nixed that early on. Waters has vowed to return to that concept, but at some later date.
Is This the Life We Really Want will be Waters’ fourth rock-focused album since splitting with Pink Floyd after 1983’s The Final Cut. The most recent was 1992’s Amused to Death. (He later released an opera titled Ca Ira in 2005.) Tickets are available now for Roger Waters’ 2017 tour, which kicks off in May.
