That is a confusing page, Flower. I have never heard of "record store day" before. What exactly is it?

I clicked on 2 links on that web page and all it gave was a list of songs, and stuff for sale.

Is record day a day that you are suppose to get price breaks, raffles, etc? I did notice a spot to search for participating stores in your area and one record store did come up, but that location is over 2 hours from me :(

Record Store Day was conceived by Chris Brown, employee of the independent record store chain, Bull Moose, located in Maine and New Hampshire and was founded in 2007 by Eric Levin, Michael Kurtz, Carrie Colliton, Amy Dorfman, Don Van Cleave and Brian Poehner as a celebration of the unique culture surrounding over 700 independently owned record stores in the USA, and hundreds of similar stores internationally. Record Store Day is celebrated the third Saturday in April.

Record Store Day is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day, and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances. Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet and greets with artists, parades, and DJs spinning records. Record Store Day is currently managed by Michael Kurtz, Carrie Colliton, Melanie Nipper, Michael Bunnell and Eric Levin.

From BBC News ~

Rare Rolling Stones track released for Record Store Day

Exile On Main Street was recorded in France, London and New York
A recently unearthed Rolling Stones track is to be released as a limited edition 7" single for Record Store Day.

Plundered My Soul was recorded during sessions for the band's sprawling 1972 double album Exile On Main Street, but was left to languish in the vaults.

The group rediscovered the track while preparing a reissue of the album, which is due to be released on 18 May.

Just 1,000 copies have been pressed for Record Store Day, 17 April, which aims to promote independent music stores.

Blur are releasing a new song to support Record Store Day
The Beatles, Pet Shop Boys and Goldfrapp are also releasing limited edition recordings in aid of the event, which is now in its fourth year.

Spencer Hickman, who manages the Rugh Trade East store in London, helped to co-ordinate the UK side of the event. He said there had been a huge surge of interest from customers and record companies.

"Last year was great but this year's really firing," he told the NME.

"It's got a bit easier, I haven't been going begging for releases, people have been going, 'We've got this unreleased Rolling Stones single, do you want it?' There's been such a wealth. "

Collector's items

Britpop stars Blur are also releasing exclusive new material in aid of Record Store Day.

Fool's Day is the first song recorded by the band's original line-up since guitarist Graham Coxon quit in 2002.

RECORD STORE DAY RELEASES

Lily Allen - Back To The Start (limited edition vinyl)
The Beatles - Paperback Writer / Rain (7" vinyl)
Blur - Fool's Day (previously unreleased 7" vinyl)
The Flaming Lips - Dark Side Of The Moon (coloured vinyl with free CD)
Goldfrapp - Head First (cassette)
Jimi Hendrix - Live EP (7" vinyl)
MGMT - Siberian Breaks (coloured vinyl)
Pet Shop Boys - Love Life (previously unreleased 7" vinyl)
Stone Roses - TBC (individually numbered vinyl album with gold foil artwork)
Tinie Tempah - Pass Out (limited edition vinyl)
Paul Weller - Andromeda remixes (previously unreleased)

Full list of UK releases

Again, only 1,000 copies of the record will be available in participating stores, making it an instant collector's item.

Lead singer Damon Albarn said independently-owned record shops were "an important part of our musical culture".

"Music is a simple way for Blur to show our support and I hope people like it," he said.

Recent figures showed that there are now just 269 independent record shops in the UK - a third of the number there were five years ago.

In-store gigs

The Blur single is part of a series of limited editions released by Parlophone Records to support Record Store Day.

Preview tracks from Courtney Love's band Hole will be available in the US
The records, in vintage-style wrapping, will also include tracks by Bat For Lashes, Hot Chip, Babyshambles and Lily Allen.

There will also be exclusive UK releases by The Flaming Lips, Jimi Hendrix, the Stone Roses and MGMT.

Record shops across the UK will also be hosting in-store gigs by the likes of Ash, Laurie Anderson, The Paddingtons and Bombay Bicycle Club.

In the US, where Record Store Day was conceived, there will be more than 200 separate releases.

They include a reissue of REM's long out-of-print first EP on blue vinyl, a "surprise" new song from rap stalwarts The Beastie Boys, and two new tracks from Hole's upcoming album.

A full list of participating stores can be found on the Record Store Day website.

^^^^Ahhh! ok....that is a pretty cool concept. Unfortunately record stores are becoming a thing of the past around here. I wish we still had the little local shop, they were awesome for trading vinyl, cassettes, CD's and video games along with being able to buy new CD's, too. IF they didn't have it in stock, they would sure get it for you within a few days.

I miss that place...It was called Bull Frog Records.

Two shops in Toronto were participating in Record Store Day, Soundscapes on College Street and Rotate This on Queen Street West. They would probably have been allocated five to ten copies each of "Plundered My Soul" but they sold out so quickly I failed to snag a copy yesterday.

I only heard about Record Store Day on the evening before, I imagine with only 1,000 copies available worldwide that you might've been wise (EEK! Who am I talking to?) to camp out in front of one of those shops for a week or two .. Perhaps they wouldn't given you a copy just to leave ...

They're already up on Fleabay of course. Sellers are getting prices in the $21.50 - $24.50 area at this point. I suspect prices will drop as it seems that a lot of the people who bought these were only interested in earning a quick buck flipping them and that the only buyers are hard care Rolling Stones vinyl collectors.

I agree! That's a stinky reason to purchase any product!
