Brilliant songwriter both from a lyrical and musical standpoint. I do admit his voice is an acquired taste though.

I'm a bit confused how we are we defining 'popular'. No offense to those who mentioned them but Joy Division, Velvet Underground, Pixies and Hawkwind don't come to mind when I think of the word.

Years ago one of the first people I met in an old technical/music forum considered the Pixies the most influential band of all time...I picked Beethoven as mine and wrote quite a nice post about explaining why. I'd never heard the Pixies before so I checked around and listened to their best studio album. I was shocked, I couldn't believe that anyone would consider them the greatest band of all time, they sounded awful to me and still do. But when you ask younger fans who grew up with the Pixies, Nirvana and numerous other new bands they rate them at the very top of their list, I understand feeling that way but it still would never make me a fan of the Pixies.

It certainly is a pretty damning list isn't it? ;)

Those same people generally mention Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. in the same breath as the Pixies too. For me, I'll just take Sonic Youth's cover of "Superstar" and "Where Is My Mind?" from the Pixies. The rest I can do without. :flirt

I'm not even including Bieber or Nicki Minaj etc.

I can see you aren't holding back Matt...:heheh:

I can agree about Oasis, they have never done anything for me.

Fun., Flo Rida, Justin Beiber, Maroon 5, Kanye West, Jason Mraz, Pink, Skrillex, Linkin Park, Usher, stuff like that is what I hate the most. The music that sounds so bad you can't imagine how it even exists and somehow it's at the top of the american charts and in every bar and restaraunt speaker. I can't stand any of it and am going out much less because Lady Gaga and such make me have a worse time.

But if they were using classic rock in business to sell things I would have issues with that too, so maybe some people like me are too rigid in their dislikes. It's all awful to me that's all I know.
