I looked in the Oxford Dictionary online and the term 'popular' is surprsingly vague:
Definition of popular (adjective)
1 liked or admired by many people or by a particular person or group:
example: she was one of the most popular girls in the school
example: these cheeses are very popular in Europe
2. [attributive] (of cultural activities or products) intended for or suited to the taste, understanding, or means of the general public rather than specialists or intellectuals:
example: editorials accusing the government of wanting to gag the popular press
- (of a belief or attitude) held by the majority of the general public:
example: many adult cats, contrary to popular opinion, dislike milk
3. [attributive] (of political activity) carried on by the people as a whole rather than restricted to politicians or political parties:
example: a popular revolt against colonial rule
= = = =
From these I would say, for example, The Beatles are one of the most popular bands in the world;
or
Oasis are popular among young people in the north-west;
We could also have an attributive example, such as Joy Division, Velvet Underground and The Pixies are examples of popular music;
All are grammatically and contextually correct. Whether you disagree, or not, is a matter of opinion. All have a ring of truth and seem reasonable to me. Finally, Hawkwind were popular among long-haired hippies like me in the seventies!
