I think they're all deserving of the honor. My personal favorites are Pete Townshend, Cat Stevens (I know I know, but he wrote all the songs he's being nominated for as Cat Stevens), Dion, Elvis Costello and Tom Waits. As for the Beatles debate, the proof is in the pudding. Generation after generation discover the fabs. Their "1" album is the best selling album of the first decade of the new century. Pretty good for a band that broke up 30 years before the new century started.
