Never noticed this thread but it is 7 years old.......
I have always thought Page and Zeps music was far more interesting than Purple or Rainbow.
The Zep albums have an atmosphere (vibe?) and overall tone that keeps one engaged while the Purple and Rainbow lps have some good tracks mixed in with mediocre songs. They didnt 'flow' like Zep lps.
I have always felt that Blackmore never received great songs to play on over his career. Technically he's probably better than Page but imho Page has more feel/originality to his 'riffs' and they are far more memorable to me than what Blackmore came up with. Certainly that had a lot to do with all the radio play Zep's 'hits' got but as Plant once said his guitar playing 'came from somewhere left of heaven '.
