It hit me tonight that the Black Crowes are classic rock. Because a classic rock station I was listening to played them and said they were Heh. 1990...Black Crowes...

For a moment I wondered if it could be true and I didn't have a solid argument against so I went with it. Then I dug out my Present: $hake your Money Maker tape and proceeded to rock.

While I still don't want to argue against them being classic rock I will insist the Black Crowes evolved the genre.

Lookit me, new guy, starting sh*t.

Hi everybody,

Welcome, Wisertime! :)

It's not only Black Crowes. "Classic rock" radio has been playing early Pearl Jam for years.

I have to be honest. If Pearl Jam and the Black Crowes were out when I was a yoot then I would have no trouble calling them classic rock. Because, when you think about it: A, I would have grown up with them and I listened to classic rock, so ipso facto - they are classic rock, and B, you gotta be honest and own-up to there already being a wide variety of artists and music within 'Classic Rock'. From late '60s to, Oh, I dunno, play what we call classic rock and you will hear all manner of evolution and 'sub-genre'.

I don't know if artists like Pearl Jam are Classic Rock. I bought their first album because I listened to Classic Rock at the time, as today, and I dug it. It fit the bill. Same with Black Crowes. I bought some Tori Amos, too, and Morphine, and Jayhawks, I also had me some Joni Mitchell, the Outlaws, Rolling Stones, and some Doors.

What's so classic about Classic Rock? The format or era of existence? The groove, the band aura, the holy sh*tness of it which will make it timeless, or, classic?

I still have a bunch of mix tapes...

Yeah. Some of mine sound so good. It's a shame that most of the 'released' ones sound like as&. If you had 1/2 decent gear you could make some good ones, though.

I was using VHS tape a few years ago. 6-8 hours of music. :pullhair:

Welcome wisertime! I'm a newb here too. I love the Black Crowes and also their collaboration with Jimmy Page. Hey, if Pagey likes 'em...

To me classic rock is the era of existence. If LZ miraculously got back together (with Jason as drummer, of course) and recorded a new song, that would be a new rock song. What about Robert Plant's solo career in the 80's? Is that "classic" rock or a classic rock artist who moved on to something "new"? I don't mind other interpretations of what classic rock is. I'm not that hung up on genres and such.

I take "classic" in this sense to mean from an earlier period and/or of high quality. As best i recall, i started hearing the term "classic rock" in the late '80s or early '90s, as a description of '60s & '70s rock.

Regardless of quality, Pearl Jam and Black Crowes sound to me like mainstream rock bands.

In the end, i agree with Roxi about not getting bogged down in labels. I either enjoy the music or i don't.
