Metallica‘s self-titled 1991 record, aka ‘The Black Album,’ is already the best-selling album of the SoundScan era, and now they’re pulling away from the pack. ‘Metallica’ received its 16th platinum certificate from the Recording Industry Association of America in December, meaning it has surpassed 16 million in sales. The certification was one of 10 awarded to the band last month.

The band’s ‘Ride the Lightning’ album from 1984 also picked up a sixth platinum certificate, and six of their singles (‘Nothing Else Matters,’ ‘Fade to Black,’ ‘The Unforgiven,’ ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls,’ ‘Master of Puppets’ and ‘The Day That Never Comes’) went gold for sales of 500,000.

Additionally, Vintage Vinyl News reports that two Metallica ringtones earned Mastertone Gold certification from the RIAA for 500,000 downloads.

Blabbermouth reports that ‘Metallica’ surpassed Shania Twain‘s ‘Come On Over’ album as the best-selling of the SoundScan era in 2009. According to Billboard, The Beatles ’1′ and Santana‘s ‘Supernatural’ are other albums from classic rockers to make the Top 10 of the best selling albums since 1991, the year SoundScan began tracking chart positions based on point-of-purchase sales.

They deserve every good accolade they get. The Black album was a huge album for metal and its a damn good album. And great work for RTL to get a 6th platinum without a doubt to me the best album they put out.

I don't think it was the best album they put out, but I do LOVE it regardless. It's a fine metal album that should be in any metal fan's collection for sure!!

Again good work by the band, these guys continue to gain great achievements. First for RTL which for me is their greatest work, The Black Album which is a major pivotal record for metal and rock and for being the best selling of the Soundscan era.

I'm not surprised by the 16 million, I'm very surprised by the 6 million albums that RTL sold. I remember when that thing came out, that record is anything but mainstream. 6 million?!! For a thrash metal record.....wow......

I remember Lars being interviewed about working with Bob Rock on The Black Album. All the fights/disputes/reconciliations that went on behind the scenes, the hard feelings of giving control to an "outsider" and allowing him to make the final decisions in the studio. At the end he thanked Bob Rock for making Metallica's version of DSOTM...:oyea: Guess none of them mind the non-stop royalty cheques from that monster.

RTL is a great album as well, it selling 6 million surprises me more than Black at 16+ million.

DSOTM in popularity status only. :heheh:

But they really did hit one out of the ballpark with that album....I'm surprised Master Of Puppets didn't really do something like this first. I'm guessing one part would be that Metallica joined the video revolution by this time.

MOP, RTL and TBA are my favorites, their 3 best records. I never felt Metallica "sold out" in anyway with the Black album, there is nothing wrong with making an album that Millions of fans both old and new enjoy and helped keep Metal alive and well when it was released.
