That Brand New album has possibly my favorite album cover ever.... it's a lot like the MGMT video for Kids! Ahaha.

Anyway, for pure unadulterated melancholy the first place I look is the subgenre called "Suicidal/Depressive Black Metal," invented by Burzum on the Filosofem album. I'll will tramp through hours of pounding snow in order to spend a blizzard in the middle of a forest listening to Filosofem... I did it when we had a blizzard last, in '09.





Then I turn towards post-rock...



Then I get to the lyrical stuff...









And then you have the indie rock.... which seems to frequently cultivate a melancholic mood...
