Just got through the album for the first time. Before I give my thoughts, i'm going to comment on what I was thinking before I listened, than i'll give my thoughts on the album.

Pre-THIRTEEN

Before I finally got around to getting my copy of the album, I was reading some thoughts on another forum about the album as a whole, and I was honestly getting a little annoyed by some of the things that people say about the album. Firstly, one of the most ridiculous things I read was "I'm not even going to listen to an album that's named like a 3rd grader would name it". Ok, firstly, why on earth do some people judge a book by it's cover so quickly. So what if the name of the album is a bit odd, I think it's kind of cool and new. Just means the band is diverse, nothing wrong with that.

Another thing, "recycled riffs". I guess I can understand where people can get that opinion from, because Public Enemy No.1 does have a couple of riffs that do sound familiar, but it's still it's own song, so it should be treated like it's a new song, which is how I went about it.

Now, for my thoughts on the album:

Post-THIRTEEN

Easily one of the most amazing thrash albums I have heard this year. Dave Mustaine sounds absolutely incredible throughout, and the riffs and lyrics are all great, as would be expected of a Megadeth album. I was a bit nervous about hearing Mustaine sing on an album again because of how they performed at Mayhem Fest, but he pulled it off as well as I hoped he would. I hold Megadeth very high in terms of thrash metal, and they have once again proven that they are still full of talent and can dish out a great thrash album, regardless if people think they have done some of the same riffs. But like they say, if it works, why ruin it. The one track that stuck out to me the most was probably, Guns, Drugs & Money, it starts heavy, stays heavy, and ends heavy. The riffs on this one particular song are ones I love to hear in thrash, so it was an instant winner for me. The album altogether is just great, one I will be listening to for a while now. I'm still going through songs for the 2nd and 3rd time right now just so I can hear them again because I enjoyed them so much. I'm not going to be too critical with this album, because it really doesn't need it. Not much negative thoughts about it in general, definitely a great one. Even the ending track was a great way to end the album.

Two thumbs up from me.

Where they get recycled riffs from is probably the fact some of the songs sound like they were re-done in production from other albums which I think isn't a bad thing.
Thirteen to me is a friendly mix of Endgame and United Abominations.
People throw such terms out too much in a negative sense. Thirteen is a fantastic album, shows what skill Mustaine had to write some of this stuff. Also the fact some of the songs were previously demos or b sides from other albums is another common complaint, frankly they should be happy those songs got the light of day they deserved.

I listened to Thirteen in it's entirety in surround sound tonight, and am most certainly impressed with the release. I was even paying attention to the lyrics as well, and they are not bad by any means. Every song kicks major ass on the album too. There wasn't one song where I was like "when is this going to end". It is the definition of a full blown thrash album in my opinion.

The lyrics are another reason I love Megadeth, Mustaine loves to passionately discuss Governments, wars, corruption, a lot of things most don't have the balls to even mention.

That is one big reason why I love Megadeth as well. They make it work too. I think the amount of emotion and power that can go into those topics really fits well with thrash as a genre because it can also be powerful.

I was also happy to hear how well Mustaine is playing since having issue with his wrists. I believe he got them worked on, but it just proves how badass of a musician he is.
