Martha and the Vandellas got their start in 1957 by 16 year old Martha Reeves, 15 year olds Rosalind Ashford-Holmes and Gloria Williams and 14 year old Anette Beard. They went by the name of Del-Phis and performed in schools, events and talent shows. They eventually got signed to a record label and changed their name to The Vels from 1961-1962, changed it again to Martha and The Vandellas from 1962-1967, and made their final name change to Martha Reeves & The Vandellas from 1967-1972, also going from four members to three and changing members over the years due to the band having disagreements.
The group disbanded in December of 1972, with Martha moving on to a solo career, her sister, Lois, joining Quiet Elegance, and Sandra retired but died in 1981 at the age of 39 from a brain aneurysm.
Martha & the Vandellas were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.
