I was an old friend of Eric Carr. I played in all of his early bands. Attached is a photo of Eric and me taken in 1966 at one of our first gigs as the Cellarmen. I knew Eric until his death and was honored to be a pallbearer at his funeral.
The last time I saw Eric was on Labor Day weekend September 1991. He came to my house for a small barbeque. It was just Eric, my family, his sister and her family. At that time he was fighting the cancer, but told us that it was in remission. He looked OK, but it was obvious that he had been through a very rough couple of months. We all reminisced about the old times. When it came to KISS, he told me that he had been replaced. He did not use the word 'fired'. But he was obviously upset about the situation and didn't want to talk about it. At one point I asked him if I should put on some KISS music. He simply said, "Please don't."
We tried to keep the conversation upbeat and we all had a very nice time. At the end of the day we said our good-byes. We were going to get together again, but that never happened. A few weeks later he collapsed and was taken to the hospital. He died a few months later.
I didn't see Eric very much during his KISS years, perhaps once or twice a year. But I just want to tell everyone that for all the years I knew Eric, I never saw or heard of him ever taking drugs, not even once. I never saw or heard of Eric ever abusing alcohol.
Anyone who says otherwise is rewriting history for their own purposes.
Eric died way too young. I think of him often.
