...hmm Music from the Elder...hmmm...My thoughts & memories:
With Kiss releasing Dynasty in 1979 I was still a fan & they remained my favorite band but things changed a lot from when I first discovered them in 1976. While They put on a hell of a show on the Dynasty tour (I loved the surprise of them rising up like statues from behind the amps with each of their color spotlights on them & they opened w/ King of the Nighttime World!!) the amount of children in the crowd was very noticeable. That mixed with them hitting the disco market at the height of the Disco Sucks Craze that was hitting the Rock crowds across the country(our local rock radio station blew up a disco record at 5PM every Friday to kick off the weekend & I Was Made for Loving You was picked one week.
By the end of '79 Kiss was beginning to fade even though I tried hanging on but now bands such as Judas Priest, The Scorpions, AC/DC...etc were where my tastes in music was headed along w/ some punk led by the Ramones. Kiss was barely in any of the rock magazines anymore so they were almost forgotten. A friend & I were at Record Theater in late 1980 and there was Unmasked. I didn't even know if it was a real Kiss album or some joke album(especially with the comic strip having a guy saying"I still say they stink!") We both ended up buying the record & hearing Paul singing in a high voice "You always get the boys you like..." had me reaching for my Kiss Alive record. That was just about it & now the aforementioned bands were really picking up, Iron Maiden was coming up strong, Sabbath now had Dio singing and had a great new album...& now there was also the Blizzard of Oz!!! ...kiss had unmasked going for them
Here it is near the end of 1981 & is Kiss even around anymore? I'm in Cavages Record Store at the mall & while looking at the new releases I come across one copy of the Elder which I almost passed right by. Once again I thought..."Is this really a Kiss album????" I stared at the album some more & walked over to the Kiss section only to find no other copies of the Elder! I ended up buying it, get home & am surprisingly pleased with the Oath but wait "What is this after the Oath? "...doo doo doo...do do followed by Paul Stanley singing in a very high almost operatic voice "I am just a Boy" Ecchh! Once again Ace saves the day with a great solo on his Dark Light tune. Actually, overall I didn't mind the Elder especially with "I" & the Kick ass instrumental "Escape from the Island" which I was picturing them opening & closing concerts with. I even remember making up a cassette of what I thought would be the ultimate Kiss concert & used that as the opener & closer. I was confused by the cover & gate fold but looked forward to the movie which I thought must be coming out soon!
Even though I wasn't blown away overall It was Better than unmasked & now I really love both albums
