I agree! People criticize artist for this but it's good to know someone realizes how hard it would be to do both. I don't see the problem as long as you know what you are getting ahead of time. For me I already have the music on c.d. and sure I prefer to have real vocals but part of going to a show is to see a show! If I was seeing a pop artist and they delivered something amazing on stage I wouldn't care if they lip synced or not.

I also agree.. Giving the fact that Britney's shows are full of high energy dance moves.. Imagine if she was miced and what you would hear was her out of breath..
I think that is one of the reason's they lip sync..

I can't imagine going to a show where I know the artist is going to be lip-synching. That's just straight-up no fun. Sure kids need extensive entertainment, but isn't that what back-up dancers are for? I love pop music but I can't say that I care the slightest bit about any bit of dancing anyone has ever done in the history of Planet Earth, least of all when it detracts from the music being performed.

Pop stars have been lip-sync'ing songs for many many years. Anyone over the age of 12 should know this and be aware of it before they go to such a show. If they are expecting some overly ridiculous and exhaustive dance routine WHILE singing just like the record, they are nuts. I don't care how talented you are, it just doesn't (and can't) happen.

I understand that it happens, and I think the people who went and were thus disappointed where a few strings short of a guitar, but I just don't understand the appeal for it.

I'd rather hear some musicians playing some live versions in front of me personally. I mean, you're either a musician or a dancer, I just don't get the idea of being one in the studio and the other on the road.

But, then, everything is subjective, and I do enjoy seeing a good dancing show every now and again, I just don't really respect musicians who then go and don't sing/play music live, and I wouldn't pay the inflated prices to go and see them. But that's just me.

I think that's just part of what pop music is and has become. We can trace the lip syncing stuff back to the 70's at the very least, probably earlier than that. But the on-stage dance, bells and whistles shows probably began in the 80's with the likes of Michael Jackon, New Kids on teh block, etc where many fans were younger and would be bored stiff watching non-musicians just stand on stage and sing. So they needed to be entertained and to do that, the boy and girl bands had to bounce around. Most weren't that talented to begin with so what better way to hid that fact than to have them lipsyncing, dancing and playing the 'perfectly' produced tracks in the background.

Give me...Explosions,,,Smoke Machines,,,Laser Lighting,,,Video Displays,,,Inflated Puppets,,,an inspired frontman "Singing" the bands songs any day over lip-synched pop dance shows. I do agree with Sooty and Thumper about the dancing etc., taking a toll making it nigh impossible to sing the songs properly but those are Not my kind of concerts anyway. I guess if they are telling the audience they are using recorded tracks to bolster the live show then it would be okay,,,not that I am buying a ticket to see any of these artists.

I disagree. If the dancing interferes with their singing/playing, then they shouldn't be dancing. If James Brown could do both, then effing Britney has no excuse.

Not defending Britney and any other goofy little popstar out there, but if James Brown could do what these Top 40 popsters are doing on stage, he'd have been far worse live than he was or he would have been lipsyncing too.

And I have never and will never say that James Brown just stood there. To say so would be to admit you've never seen a single live performance ever. however, his "moves" were during instrumental sections and not while singing. The style of music allowed for that, whereas newer pop (last 20 years or so) have much more singing and very little "instrumental" time.
