O.K. Cosmic, I was introduced to Ian himself in MT and I really respected the emotion of the song you posted in there Dead Man Walking! I'd only known Mott by name until this thread and I found that I knew Cleveland Rocks from Drew Carey and had to look up All The Young Dudes to remind myself that it was somewhat familiar and I'm sure I've heard it in a movie or two. It definitely had the Bowie feel! After listening to all the Mott songs you posted they sound like a diverse band in style and Ian's raw vocals at best separate them from the pack and give them a lot of emotion especially in songs like Waterlow which is my favorite in the bunch. What a delicate song and you could definitely tell it came from a real place. Listening to it again and I really like it!

Cosmic, I will come back for sure for the portion that covers Ian's solo career but your thread is so immense I have to pace myself in order to take in all the text and songs! Great job!

It's ok that you didn't know he wrote "Cleveland Rocks". Lady didn't know he wrote "Once Bitten, Twice Shy." I think a lot of people have heard Ian's work, they just don't realize it because it's been much more popular when covered by other artists.

"All The Young Dudes" has been used in a couple movies, yeah. It was in "Clueless" and "Juno", the latter being where I first heard Mott's version. Originally I'd heard the song from a cover that Ozzy did of it and while watching Juno I went "Hey, I totally know that song." and hunted down Mott and that's where this story began. Aside from just those two movies though it's a very popular 70's song and considered highly influential.

Mott actually is a much deeper band than a lot of people give them credit (they usually just credit them for "All The Young Dudes"). Its because of that that I steered away from the bands hits. Otherwise tracks like "Waterlow" (also one of my favorite Mott song, which I went out of my way to upload to Youtube) would never see the light of day and that'd be a crying shame.

Take your time looking through it. I wanted to make this thread my biggest yet and there is no reason for you to go and OD on it. I think you'll like the his solo career even more than with Mott because I think he focused more on emotional numbers (particularly in over the last few albums), or maybe that's just the part of his catalog that I like the most so it just seems like that's what he's focusing on. I dunno.

That was a touching performance Priest. Despite Ian's small fanbase everyone in the audience knew all of the words to "Saturday Gigs". I think it really just shows how intimate of a relationship he has with his fans.

It is. I get a little teary eyed listening to it sometimes because unlike most bands that come and go Mott actually said goodbye to their fans properly.
