How Weird is "too weird"?

Coming back to this some years later, I have to say I know exactly how weird is too weird for me. Too weird for me is when it crosses the line into just pure, unabashed avant garde. Now, that does NOT include things like harsh noise or black metal or whatever because those things have a structure and a purpose. I would also say I like a lot of music that is considered avant garde.

Too weird for me means when it becomes so overt that it seems lazy. I love for music to be as weird as possible just so long as it doesn't cross over into humdrum experimentation. What I mean is that you can have an album that is utterly unconventional and as weird as bloody hell, like say Surfer Rosa or Filosofem. Or you can have something like Mr. Bungle which is just completely far out. In my eyes, Surfer Rosa & Filosofem are more experimental. Because being overtly weird is easier than coming up with new ideas within a structure.

Couldnt find an avant garde rock thread so since this one is about weird music here goes....some very strange bands that have cult followings.

Naked City- "Grand Guignol'- short piece from lp...some are longer and calmer but are all weird

Mr Bungle-'Everyone I went to High School with ...'

Secret Chiefs-'Horsemen of the Invisible' (reminds me of Dead Can Dance on drugs)

The Drift by Scott Walker

has anyone heard of this album?
I have heard of Scott Walker and like his early material solo and with Walker Bros......his later lps fit in well with the things I posted above...very avant garde and at times almost unlistenable unless one likes truly dark weird songs.

This isnt weird per se but has a very haunting quality to it.....interesting lp btw.....pop songs with orchestration but odd/ eerie melodies and melancholy haunting bits here and there.

SCott Walker 3-Its Raining Today
Scott Walker 4 is similar to 3 and if you are a fan is a must....he then did about 5 lps of mostly cover material and they were largely ignored and then with Climate of the HUnter he started doing stranger material that sounds a bit like weird later Bowie but interesting imho. He continued to do odd lps until he passed in 2019.

The lands of Marshall Stack.
...it depends on my mood...my late Dad liked Stockhausen....too avant for my palate...Zappa and this fella often pushed the envelope...and teased the boundaries a little further which is good.
Captain Beefheart - Ice Cream For Crow.
