Hi -
I hope I am doing this correctly and if I am not..... I am sorry.
I am in need of some help and I hope this is the place. My bf heard a song "years" ago and he often sings part of the song. I am trying to figure out who sings it so I can find it for him and give it to him for his b-day. The lyrics go something like this..... "I heard Pappa tell Mamma, Let the boy boogie woogie" If anyone can help me with this I will greatly appreciate it.

Thanks so much for any help!

Sounds like a job for GOOGLE-MAN!!!
Let's put ZZ Top and "let the boy boogie woogie" into the slot and see what we get!!!

(clang, whistle, snort...DING!!!)

I get "Long Distance Boogie"
here's the lyrics

zz top said:
Is everybody feelin' good? You makin' us feel good, too!
Now, early this morning I got on that long distance telephone
and I called my mama.
I said, "Mama, this is your boy, and I'm way down here in
New Orleans, Louisiana."
And she said, "That's all right, boy."
And she turned to my papa and she said,
"Papa, our boy's way down there in New Orleans.
We cannot let him stay out all night long."
She did!
Long about that time, I heard my papa lean toward my mama.
I heard papa tell mama, "Let that boy boogie-woogie."
He said, "It's in him and it's got to come out."

So I went downtown.
There's a lot of people there.
They was-a really havin' a ball.
And I felt so good.
Yes, I felt so good.
Yes, I felt so good.
Yes, I felt so good.
Yes, I felt so good.
Yes, I felt so good.
Yes, I felt so good.

Boogie, children!

Boogie, children!

sound about right?
THANKS GOOGLE-MAN!!!!

Thank you all sooo much!

:D
Thanks very much everyone for the help. I have found the song and ordered the CD. I was having so much trouble finding it because he (bf) would say to me...... "I think Dire Straits did it". He was not sure (duh) but that was his guess. I checked and double checked Dire Straits and couldnt find anything that even came close.

Like I said .... Thanks so much for help.... I will pass the word on about this site to everyone I know who LOVES music. You all have been so kind!!! :D :p :)

Good work, Martha/Google Man. But luck was on your side if you actually found the version she was looking for. This song has been remade by every boogie band in the world.

As far as I can tell, the song has its origins in John Lee Hooker's "Boogie Chillen," which was recorded 11/3/48 and reached #1 on the R&B charts on 2/19/49. The lyrics follow:

John Lee Hooker
Boogie Chillen

Well, hey hey
When I first came to town, people
I was walking down Hastings Street
I heard everybody talking about
Henry's Swing Club

I dropped in there that night
I did the boogie
I did the boogie, boogie
I did the boogie
Yeah, hey hey

One night I was laying down
Well I heard
My mama and papa talking
About the boogie

Do you wanna boogie
Do you wanna boogie
Do the boogie now
Hey hey hey hey

I'm gonna tell you something
One night when I was laying down
I heard, I heard, I heard...
Do the boogie...

Feel good, feel good, feel good, feel good...
Feel...feel...feel...feel...feel...
Thank you...

If you google on "Boogie Chillen" you will also find lyrics for a Van Morrison version with lyrics that seem truer to the original Hooker version than those above.

The song was remade in 1953 by Little Junior's Blue Flames and entitled "Feelin' Good." This song was produced by Sam Phillips and released by Sun Records on 7/8/53. It was Sun's first hit, reaching #5 on the R&B charts on 10/3/53. This version is the template for all the boogie band versions that followed. Interestingly, John Lee Hooker himself remade the song in 1954 reflecting the Little Junior arrangement and released it entitled "Gotta Boogie."
