Ron Wood??? He mostly played bass in the 60's and his guitar playing is average at best.

wtf I just asked my dad about him and what you said, he said "that fool never heard of Faces or the Stones it seems."

I like Buckethead for music as oldtime as guitar songs are he is good.

Hendrix for sure. He completely revolutionized the way the guitar is played.

maybe if those 80s axe 'gods' did more than mooch eddie van halen's style people who aren't guitar players would recognize their names. there's no denying they have technical prowess, but masterful technique is not necessarily indicative of incredible talent.

when someone like hendrix played people had to invent new terms to describe what they heard. THAT is incredible talent.

personally i'd much rather hear a person say "yeah... well... ummm.. that was definitely something" after hearing me play rather than having them say "wow you sound just like guitar player X".

then again it's also part of the subtlety between a musician and a guitarist.

I would have to go with Jimi Hendrix. Eric Clapton would be a close second followed by Peter Townsend.

Jimi would be an excellant choice. Just imagine how great he could have been if he did'nt die so young.
