Soot and Stars
I AM SOOT!
I know there's a lot of amateur crap on youtube but there is also a lot of talent as well! Doing covers is a great way to start to get your name around and some of the covers are actually very impressive and have some great creative takes on the originals. Better or not? Who gives a shit!
It's cool to see interpretations! My favorites are stripped down versions of darker or heavier songs. Here is a place I'll use to put ones that actually impress me. I'll go from just dudes/chicks in their own house/rooms to small scale shows by bands that haven't broken out yet.
First here's a NIN cover of Hurt by the band Blindside Poets. They said they wanted to keep it closer to the original than Cash's but said it was hard to not be swayed by Cash's. What I got was a fresh version of a song that's great but played to death. This gives it a Jazzy soulful feel for the first time.
