What hit songs and great bands from yesteryear were once great but now sound dated?

IMO, Hall and Oates stuff from the 70s still sounds as good as ever, but a lot of their music from the 80s just doesn't hold up these days. Case in point, the following songs:

I really can't relate to this thing. Music I like is timeless. Same goes for any music I ever liked.

I love the jazz I heard in the early 70s
I love the rock...etc etc

Good music is never dated but maybe that's just me.

Just an observation, but I find 80s music in general to have a very distinctive sound, which is great in a way, but if you don't like it, there were a few 80s groups with that Synthesiser-ish sound which today just sounds 80s.

The first group that came to mind for me is the Beach Boys. They are still a great band but that have not aged so gracefully musically.

To me none of the artists I grew up with sound dated, I still enjoy their music that includes Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Peggy Lee and a host of others.

Because I love classical music which is 100's of years old, and you still hear the famous composer's best works today it gives me a really good perspective when it comes to all the genres I love.

I agree with you Cosmic about the Beach Boys in one sense, but I still play Endless Summer when I am in a party mood. I get waves of fun nostalgia listening to that album.

The one thing that does get to me once in a while, are the endless amount of songs with "Baby...baby...baby...baby"...ad-nauseum. Even if the music is catchy it wears me out pretty fast if I'm in a critical listening frame of mind.

Of course a couple of flaming shooters in the right setting I can put up with just about anything.:grinthumb

You know I wasn't thinking about Zeppelin...but you are right there are times it does get under my skin.

I'd bet your MASSIVE vinyl collection Nolo, that "Love" and "Baby" are the two most overused words in rock songs period.:hm:

Oh, Whitesnake is full of that. There is no album without 'Love' in a song title.
It's not that massive though. :heheh:

^^It's more Massive than mine, and I'm almost done collecting so I'll never catch you now.:wa

Never really got into Whitesnake but I'll take your word for it...I just find that to be so repetitive and why I love bands like BOC so much, even when they write a love song it's got some quirky/interesting themes involved.:D

For me it would be Prince. I wish he would go back and re-record all of his classic stuff with a really hot, full band. I feel the same way about Toni Braxton. Her stuff sounds so much better live with a real band, as opposed to the sterile, machine-like sound of her studio recordings.
