Re: Fleetwood Mac
I have a hard time taking someone serious that claims Fleetwood Mac's s/t album sounds like every blues band at a local bar on a Saturday night.
Fleetwood Mac-Fleetwood Mac: Feb.1/68
Cream-Fresh Cream: Dec.9/66
Ten Years After-Ten Years After: Oct.27/67
It was just over a year between all three releases.
From what I hear from Fresh Cream is the sound is basically still rooted in the blues with a tinge of jazz and psych/pop on some of the tracks. Half the tracks on the album are covers of originals. "Spoonful" is the highlight of the album and "I'm So Glad" and "Sleepy Time Time" are rather annoying IMO. I prefer Ten Years After version of "Spoonful" to that of Cream's. Overall a rather inconsistent album. 6/10
Ten Years After's s/t debut is again an album still based on the blues and over half the tracks are covers of originals. Alvin Lee and company add the swagger and boogie with jazz influences as well to produce a upbeat, fast tempo on certain tunes and also pound out the heavy blues on the last track, "Help Me". Very well done. 7/10
Can a white man sing the blues? Peter Green sure in the hell can. This album is dedicated to Chicago electric blues as the roots are very clear to my ears. The album cover depicts what's inside, filthy blues. The interplay between the lead guitar of Peter Green and the bottleneck slide of Jeremy Spencer is riveting. The rhythm section chugs and keeps it simple and solid. The sound of the album almost sounds like a band mastering the blues at a local bar on a Saturday night. Really, not a weak track on the album. Essential for any fan of the blues and history of rock. 9/10
