The first CD I bought was Green Day's American Idiot. I've bought a lot more since, like Aerosmith's Greatest hits, Styx Greatest Hits, and The Who's Greatest hits.

First album I actually bought was Rainbow - Down to Earth. Seem to recall that Pink Floyd - WYWH and a Deep Purple (A's & B's?) compilation were around the same time.
First single was a freebie (Smiths crisps) - Slade - Far Far Away.

Nothing too embarrasing - yet.

However, when I first bought singles, the early ones that spring to mind were ABBA - Name of the Game (it goes downhill from here!), Showaddywaddy - When and Boney M - Ma Baker.......

Wow this is an old thread, it must have been rescued from the graveyard. :)

It's hard to recall the first album. Led Zeppelin II or maybe Chicago II.

I didn't start with rock... The first album I bought was "American Life" by Madonna...
the first rock album I bought was a progressive rock one... and it was In the Wake of Poseidon, by King Crimson.

Weird.. I still have most albums I bought way back when - I used the family allowance.. which we got on a Wednesday-bunked off School every Wednesday afternoon with a fake chiropodist appointment card and scouted around the Record Shops. Purchases were..likely -
Fragile, Paranoid, Thank Christ For The Bomb, Autobahn, Very Eavy Very Umble, Next, Faust Tapes, Led Zep ll, Queen l and Foxtrot.
