This is a tough one. It would be easier to divide them into periods.

Brian Jones era: Aftermath
Post Brian Pre Mick Taylor transition era: Beggars Banquet/Let It Bleed
Mick Taylor era: Sticky Fingers
Woody era: Some Girls

If I had to pick only one, it would probably be Aftermath, the last real pop record they did. It showcases Brian Jones abilities as a multi-instrumentalist before he crashed and burned.

Did the counter-culture die, or was it murdered?

Here's my ranking of Stones' albums up to the mid-nineties not including greatest hit packages or live albums:

Flowers
December's Children
Rolling Stones Now
Sticky Fingers
Beggars' Banquet
Let It Bleed
Their Satanic Majesties Request
Steel Wheels
Dirty Work
Between the Buttons(U.S.)
Some Girls
Out of Our Heads
Voodoo Lounge
Tattoo You
Black and Blue
Emotional Rescue
Aftermath(U.S.)
England's Newest Hitmakers
Exile on Main Street
12 X 5
Goat's Head Soup
It's Only Rock 'n Roll
Undercover

If I had to pick just one Stones' album on CD though, it would be either "Forty Licks" or "The London Years":

Jagger said, when he met Zappa, that Zappa singled out "Between the Buttons" as being his favorite.

good production, they are started to toy with a lot of neat styles.

Good call!

Too many rock fans don't go beyond "Beggars Banquet", "Let It Bleed", "Sticky Fingers" and "Exile on Main Street". For whatever reason this annoys me, probably because it's indicative that they're not hard core Stones' fans like I am.

either Flowers or Let It Bleed. for me this changes often and these two albums would be at the top for me right now. others that might appear may be Exile, Aftermath, Get Yer Ya Ya's Out!, and December's Children
