Franz Liszt was the best piano player ever , J.S. Bach the greatest organist ever, but as far as keyboards for rock music, I agree Rick Wakeman gets my vote, Keith Emerson is right up there as well.

When I took my first piano lessons, the teacher put out Chopin's music sheet......I played Liszt:ha:

Franz Liszt was not only a virtuoso on the piano but with the ladies of the various courts he played recitals at when he was a young man. I was reading his biography and his exploits with the "Groupies" were legendary and he was treated like a Rock Star, the very first one. I love Chopin as well, but I feel that Liszt doesn't get enough credit for his contributions musically, he also designed and built one of the first concert halls specifically to enhance the music experience for the fans.

Back on topic now,,,I am going to show Stevie Wonder some love, maybe not a virtuoso like some others listed here, but considering he is blind his playing skills deserve to to be mentioned.

I have several pictures of composers in my studio...and I have to admit, other than Beethoven, Franz was actually a very handsome dude....some of the others were just butt ugly - hahaha

I've heard that FL was quite dapper with the ladies....maybe he had the original groupie? - hahaha

Stevie Wonder was fantastic...if you havent seen the Tonto Synthesizer, it's pretty impressive...Stevie used it for the bassline in Boogie On Reggae Woman

Awww there's too many good ones mentioned there - I especally like Rick Wright (RIP) from Pink Floyd, Rick Wakeman is always another one - but to be honest he's too much of a showoff with his keyboards that his falls under their own banner - unless someone has done more than 4 or 5 keyboards at the same time! ;-)

Did anyone say Chick Churchill from Ten Years After? Their perhaps in a different league again, but someone might have recall something they did since Ten Years After were doing quite nicely around the time of Woodstock (1969).

I am partial to Keith Emerson or Rick Wakeman, but I also like Gregg Rolie of Santana & Journey

I want to add to this conversation that there are alot of great session keyboardists out there like Brian Auger, who has toured and recorded with too many music legends to even begin to mention them.

Tough question but probably Keith Emerson as much for his output with the Nice as with Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
