Blues - J.L.Hooker, he's an essential blues artist.
Bluesrock - Robin Trower - his albums with James Dewar are a must!!
Progrock - two 'hard to get into bands', but worth the effort. Gentle Giant and Van Der Graaf Generator.

I don't have time right now Cannons, but I'll be back later and sort out the new additions to your list, including a couple of my own recommendations, which I will Classify.;)

Thanks alot Lord Grendel!

You are welcome Cannons, I haven't added TrekkieELO's to your list until he classifies them.

Many of the ones I thought of are added already but here are a couple more.

Classical, Rimsky-Korsakov. Specifically his Suites, they are a great entry point into classical music.

Jazz, George Benson. Breezin' or In Flight they are my favorites.

Blues Rock, Pat Travers. His early albums are really good blues rock, later on he became a little more mainstream. His ST debut and Crash & Burn would be my picks.

Folk Rock, Gordon Lightfoot. Summertime Dream I play this one all the time.

Psychedelic Rock, Hawkwind. Early Hawkwind is the best, In the Hall of the Mountain Grill is really good.

Punk Rock, Tom Robinson Band. His album "Power" is one of the best ever done in the genre, I rate it just behind London Calling by the Clash.

There Cannons, not only an artist but a specific album recommendation to go with them.

Yeah it might be a good idea to add a recommended album or two after the artist's name. If you don't want to, no biggie. :D

Well considering that Lord Grendel has the second post in this thread, and has Ray Stevens as his avatar, methinks a
Novelty/Parody Song category should be added.
They ain't much now BUT were huge in the late '50s and early '60s.

Me quintessential list:
Ray Stevens
Alan Sherman
Tom Lehrer
Phil Ochs
The Saliva Sisters
&
Myself (as being #1 on the Must Ignore At All Cost list of the Ruling Class)

SOGS,
Tor
